Introduction
This article is meant for helping you on how to choose a good pest control company after knowing seven basic tips that will kill the pests without exposing your health to unnecessary risks.
The tips cover from the dilution of the products, the quality of them, the combat methods, the warranty, what to expect about smells and stains, what to do with your pets and specially the attention that the elderly, kids and people with respiratory problems must have.

These aren't all the tips possible when choosing a pest control business, but these seven tips will give you a solid enough basis to make the right choice.

1st Tip: The poison mixture
The first tip is to ask for the mixing of products to be done at the time of the service. The reason is simple: you must be sure that the poison used has the quality you're paying for. Many companies say that they work with famous label products, when they actually work with low quality products or even homemade. Some companies say that they'll take the empty packages to prove the product they use, but an empty package proves nothing! And keep on mind that the products once mixed with water, or any other diluents, loses they effect as times passes by, so it's important they mix the product at your place.

2nd Tip - Combat methods
For each pest there's a different way to control, whether the product to be use or the method of application is. Some application are made directly to the houses footer, some are necessarily made to the footer and the entire wall, as well to the floor or roof. There are differences on the type of poison to be used. Poisons that work perfectly against roaches don't necessarily affect spiders and scorpions for instance.

Be careful when pest control businesses don't ask you what is the pest you're having trouble with when you ask for a price. Some only care about where you live and how big your house is. This may flag that the pest control company doesn't have specialized methods of combat for each kind of infestation.

In more specific cases, such as termites on the yard or very complicated infestations, the company should worry to make a visit before giving a price to a service. It's essential that they really take the time to determine what poison and strategy is more appropriate to control your pest problem.

3rd Tip - Long Warranties
The third tip is about the service warranties given by the pest control businesses. Be careful with very long warranties. High quality poison suppliers don't offer more than three months of effectiveness to most urban pests.

So why most pest control companies give six months of warranty on their services? Here's the reason, the pest control is active during the first three months that the product is still active, after this period the products lose power and the infestation starts to grow back slowly. While the infestation is low you can't really detect it, only when it rises to a considerable number, since most pests have nightly habits. Usually it takes more than three months to the infestation to grow large enough for you to detect it, giving a total of six months since the last service. The problem with this kind of trick, or fake warrant, is that you feel protected for six months, when that's not true. Your health, hygiene and welfare have been compromised without you realizing it.

4th Tip - Products that smell
There is a belief that effective poisons have strong and unpleasant smell. That's just not true.
High quality poisons usually don't have a strong smell, most of them are totally free of any smell. Some businesses just use kerosene to trick the consumer to think they are using a strong product, when is a fact that the kerosene won't control any pest by itself.

There are specialized products with strong smells, but they are usually not necessary to control your everyday infestation, better suited to professional kitchens or very large infestations that require you to have full knockdown power. These products are a lot more toxic to humans and although they have this knockdown power, they lose effect much more quickly than other poisons.
Since they're cheaper products, many pest control businesses utilize these products on a daily basis. Once again the cheaper cost comes with a low quality in service.

5th Tip - Stains on the walls
A very common question is: Will the spray stain my wall?
There is a huge variety of products on the professional pest control business and you probably have heard somebody who said that their walls were stained after a service. These stories are probably true, but they're not the rule. You must be aware that high quality products don't stain your walls, furniture or clothes.

6th Tip - Pets
People Who have pets are often scared when are going to hire a pest control service. When pets live in a place that need this kind of service, some cares must be taken by the company.
When dealing with rats for example, the danger of your pet to be poisoned by mistake is extremely low, since the rat bait is very bitter to be unbearable to pets and kids, except for rats who love the bait and can't fell the bitterness.

Besides that, for a dog to die due rat bait ingestion it would need to eat almost 600 pounds of the product, as long as it's a high quality product made specifically for rats and not some homemade product or low quality.

Good pest control companies study the perimeter when baiting, so that they put the products on places that they'll be consumed by rats and are not reachable for your domestic animal.
For spray applications there aren't huge cares, except for the isolation of the area that'll be sprayed, since after the spray dries high quality products crystallize on the area and act only on cold blood animals, such as the pests and not on humans or pets.

The great tip is to keep the pet away while the service is being executed, so it won't be curious, in that way they won't even notice the chemical products used.

These actions will guarantee that the application will be a danger only for the pests. Again, you must remember that some of these tips are applicable when you have hired a high quality pest control company.

7th Tip - Kids, Elderly and people with allergies
Places where infants, people with allergies or elderly live need special treatment. This audience need the application of less aggressive products. There are special types of products for pest control to be used on these cases, and although they are more expensive, they are necessary for the welfare of these people.
Always remember to let your chosen pest control company to know the age group of the people who live or attend to the place that the service will be on.
