School Yoga Programme - A New Initiative of NRHMBY: maruf alom | Category: Health | Submitted: 2011-02-14 18:55:11
National Rural Health Mission (NRHM), Nagaon in collaboration with Vyakti Vikas Kendra - North East, a sister organization of internationally acclaimed educational and humanitarian NGO "The Art of Living Foundation" engaged in stress-management and service initiatives has been started Yoga programmes in Government High Schools of Nagaon since 2009 phase wise. Under the programme Yoga Classes were imparted to the students of class V, VI, VII, VIII and IX for five days a week. On Saturdays interested students of class X, XI and XII can also attend the yoga classes. The course duration is minimum 20 classes per child @ 40 minutes per class. The programme is implemented in the district by covering in all the 11 BPHC (Block Primary Health Centre). In the first phase financial year 2009-10 under the programme 25 nos of schools were covered where almost 18167 students has been benefited by Yoga Classes. The School Yoga programme is being implemented under PPP (Public Private Partnership) mode. Considering the tremendous success and huge participants of the students 2nd phase of the programme is also started in present financial year by covering another 25 no's of Schools where 12089 students will be imparted yoga training. Comments of Inspector of School: Mr. Ratul Kr. Borah, Inspector of School, Nagaon in his official letter to Joint Director of Health Services Cum Member Secretary, DHS, Nagaon expressed his satisfaction towards the Yoga programme. He further requested to extend the programme for another 6 months if rule and guidelines permits. He also informed that the students are highly benefited from this programme and the Headmasters /Principals are satisfied with the programme and its impact. Comments of School Teacher: Headmistress of Govt Urban High School, Nagaon informed that they need one regular Yoga Teacher in their school for the physical and mental development of the students since the students are being benefited by the special yoga classes. Same opinion also passed by Headmaster Haibargaon High School. Principal Juria Higer Secondary School emphasised on the extension of Yoga classes. Formal feedback has been collected from almost every head of the Schools and every one advocated for the further extension of the Programme in their schools.
