In order to get private companies involved in the research program of one university they needed to find a way for both sides to meet. Labeling the conference as academic entrepreneurship helped a biotechnical center in one state. An official organization like this one exists by state law for technological advancement. The state will evaluate the application of a center to see if certain qualifications are met.

The state allots one million dollars for research funds but receiving any amount from the state will require the center to find a private donor matching what they already have. Other than talk about dentistry and surgery a venture capital organization supported a conference that also spoke of drugs. A lot of different corporations from venture groups to companies for pharmaceuticals and biotechnics joined the conference with total participating companies amounting to about 50. One aspect of the conference was to provide the different companies with an idea of the dental research being performed in the university including several reasons behind the studies.

He was skeptical of the conference idea at first, but found that all the participants took the exchange of ideas more seriously than he had expected. There were some companies whom they did not expect any business from but they were shocked when these companies showed interest. The success of this first conference paved the way for a second one. Without any interest or investment opportunities successful events lose their value. Not only did they generate huge publicity but they even attained different research contracts.

Dental science achieved a remarkable tool in the form of the periotron as it provided the means by which dentists can easily diagnose gingivitis and periodontal problems then find the necessary treatment. Plaque control and periodontal oxygen levels were also studied and research efforts led to the fabrication of pH electrodes and ultraviolet cameras for plaque and miniaturized oxygen as well. They also learned how valuable saliva can be especially for diagnostic testing. Saliva can provide better information with regard to alcohol use. Diabetic patients can have their glucose levels measured with the crevicular fluid.

There is now a huge possibility for conditions like high blood pressure and diabetes to affect a person for more life years jeopardizing the treatment he may need later on. Physicians who try to treat a problem in one part of the body can result to prescribing medicines that result to problems with the patient's saliva flow. Dry mouth syndrome is not rare and about 14% of seniors experience this. Malodor and caries together with denture problems are problems that can be rooted from dry mouth syndrome.

A dentist is knowledgeable about the hard and soft tissue but to care for the latter there is much development required to produce diagnostic tools. A good checkup traditionally means no cavities. Earlier dental check ups can be satisfied should no cavities present themselves but nowadays there is much information being given to teach people the importance of caring for their gingiva and periodontia as well.

Nothing ever turns out to be one sided in this kind of team up. When there are constant pressures coming from the Food and Drug Administration, the Federal Commission, and even the academic world options are limited for the dental field but they are aware of the consequences.

Finding money is a competitive situation. With growth rates for government funds constantly decreasing at alarming rates research programs may experience more obstacles when the people involved attempt to source their funds from the government. The situation can also be burdened by problems with inflation as well as having equipment that are aging. Much rivalry already exists among those who are in line for the research funding. This is not an isolated event as a number of new dental graduates faced the problem of having fewer patients for all of them to treat as cavity cases decreased.
