The United Nations General Assembly passed a historic resolution on diabetes on 20 December 2006.

The Resolution acknowledges the seriousness of diabetes. All nations are requested to develop national policies to tackle the diabetes epidemic. At the same time, the Resolution designates -14 November, the current World Diabetes Day, as a United Nations Day, to be observed every year beginning in 2007- and -invites all Member States, relevant organizations of the United Nations system and other international organizations as well as civil society including non-governmental organizations and the private sector, to observe World Diabetes Day in an appropriate manner, in order to raise public awareness on diabetes and related complications as well as on its prevention and care, including through education and the mass media.-

According to the WORLD HEALTH ORGANISATION (WHO) report, India is likely to have 57 million diabetics by 2025. And this may be just the tip of the icebarg: screenings indicate that the ratio is about 1:1 in urban areas. It could be as high as 3:1 in the rural population.

Doctors believe that Indians may be genetically more susceptible to it. And it strikes Indians at a much younger age than it does elsewhere. While the peak age for person getting diabetes in the US is between 60 to 70, it's 40-50 years in India. In other words, the exponential increase in disease has changed diabetes from an individual problem to an alarming public health worry!

Hence, a lot more Governmental activities needed. For example, Ministry of Social Welfare should take note of the fact that besides hereditary factors, social and economic conditions also aggravate risk of diabetes.

PRECAUTION:

1) A healthy lifestyle and plenty of exercise is the finest insurance against DIABETES.

2) Regular health examinations for children. They should be given proper nutritious food and should be encouraged to take part in co-curricular activities to fight against DIABETES.
