A smart way to start your work from home business which requires a low cost to start and operate is apartment finding service. Apartment complexes spend thousands of dollars in advertising and promotions to find renters. A practical example of this is - you must have often heard or experienced that if you stay in an apartment and refer a friend to that apartment who eventually moves in, the apartment complex pays you a referral bonus which can range from $100 to $600 or even more depending on the rent and locality of the apartment complex. Its a great way to start your work from home / home based business.

An apartment finding service works in the same way, there is no cost to the renter but the apartment complex pays you a referral fee or commission. It is always better to start this work from home business in the area that you live. You can categorize apartment complexes based on the price range, number of bedrooms, facilities provided by the apartment (like swimming pool, gym etc), schools in the area, distance from the recreational facilities like golf. You can also categorize based on senior housing complex, low income housing or just regular rentals. Which area is more safe and which might be a bit unsafe (if any).

Take pictures of apartments and keep brochures of the apartments.

There is a lot that the people can gain by using an apartment finding service:
1. Its free for them as you make money from the commission which the apartment complex gives you.
2. They get all the rental options at one place without going and visiting each and every complex.
3. They save time.
4. Since you are a local person and know about the region (like safety, schools etc.), the apartments may not always provide all the facts upfront as you would.

ALWAYS BE HONEST with your clients even if it results in referring to an apartment from which you get a lower commission. Keep referrals of previously satisfied people.

How to advertise and promote your business:
1. Advertisements in local newspapers and yellow pages.
2. Use internet if you can and put articles on sites like craigslist.
3. Let all your friends know about your business.

You can extend your business to town homes, condos, high-rises, duplexes and homes. With time create a website if possible, so people can reach you via internet or search engines like google. You need not necessarily buy a domain name atleast initially, simply use free services like "geocities.yahoo.com" which are designed to be used by novice users.

You can operate apartment finding service by working from home but would need a phone, fax and computer/typewriter. You can work on this as part time and the potential of earning can be $5000 to $30000 per year but can increase (or decrease) depending on your location, market conditions, how well you are able to promote your apartment finding service and provide good deals for your customers.
