Microsoft has announced its release of the new OS Windows 7 considering that Vista was not able to live up to the expectations. The exact release date is not yet finalized but it is expected to be released by late 2009 or early 2010. The leak of Milestone 1 build 6519 of Windows 7 has already given rise to speculations and expectations. However, the first look does not give you a hint of any drastic change from the design of Vista.

Due to the failure of Vista, the expectations from windows 7 are directly linked to Vista. The reduced user modularity has been a problem with Vista. Some of the features have been forced upon users even if they do not want them. Provision to turn unnecessary features off to improve system performance without interfering with the system stability is a very sought after feature from the new OS. The flexibility with layout that was available with earlier versions of windows had been removed from vista . The display properties option in the desktop context menu has already made a comeback in the Milestone 1 release.

Another important aspect would be resource optimization. Vista's poor performance on modestly resourced machines has been a major complaint among users. Hopefully, Windows 7 would see through this problem of resource optimization.

In words of Bill Gates :
"We're hard at work, I would say, on the next version, which we call Windows 7. I'm very excited about the work being done there. The ability to be lower power, take less memory, be more efficient, and have lots more connections up to the mobile phone, so those scenarios connect up well to make it a great platform for the best gaming that can be done, to connect up to the thing being done out on the Internet, so that, for example, if you have two personal computers, that your files automatically are synchronized between them, and so you don't have a lot of work to move that data back and forth."

Personally, I would like the new OS to prompt me less often before taking an action. The user access control in Vista prompts a user thrice before some action which is quite irritating. A light OS with higher modularity and customization options is what Microsoft users demand and expect from the new release. But, right now, its just wait and watch.

Please feel free to leave a comment on any other cribs about vista or any new information about windows 7.
