Suicide is the eighth leading cause of death men in the United States. Women actually attempt suicide more often than men do, but it has been found that men are likely to die four times more than women. This is mainly because of the intensity with which men attempt to commit suicide and also because of the methods used by men and women.

Men use deadly methods of killing themselves which is more effective. These are methods like shooting oneself or other similar methods. Women try to kill themselves using methods like swallowing sleeping tablets.

Most people who have committed suicide have been found to have some sort of mental condition. Many were on treatment for mental or psychiatric conditions like depression. Many others were also found to have a history of substance abuse. They were either alcoholics or drug users.

Another important fact is that men above the age of sixty five were found to be at more risk of committing suicide. All these statistics were common in all parts of the world too and were consistently similar.

Another important aspect about suicide in people who were not having any predisposing mental condition or were not substance abusers was that these people attempted suicide impulsively. Most of those attempting suicide impulsively were successful in their attempt to kill themselves.

There are many ways of preventing many of these suicides. They are listed below.

1. Warning signs: Most of those who commit suicide give either a verbal warning or there are signs of the impending act. As soon as there are visible symptoms, appropriate preventive measures should be taken.

2. Counseling: Adequate counseling should be provided for people who are on the verge of a nervous breakdown.

3. Government role: Many suicides are also committed due to political reasons. These are under the control of the government. So the government should take appropriate steps to prevent suicides.

4. Telephone hotlines: Many countries have established hotlines thorough which people who have problems can get counseling. It has been found that many people with suicidal tendencies have been saved by these counselors who are manning these phone lines.

5. Family support: Many of those who commit suicide are ones who feel lonely. So family members play an important role in preventing suicides. Adequate time spent with family members, especially in times of crisis is very important in preventing suicides.

These are some of the ways in which suicides can be prevented.
