Colic is a problem that occurs in many babies. Many parents, especially mothers would have noticed that their babies seem to cry more than other babies. This may probably be because of colic. Parents who are ignorant of this problem may harm their child. Colic is in fact not because of a single problem and the symptoms too may vary from child to child.

The most common method of identifying colic is if that the babies cry uncontrolled for more than three hours each day and this happens on at least three times a week, then you should understand that your baby has a high chance of having colic. You may think that every baby cries and what the difference is.

What every parent needs to know about colic is that the baby with colic is otherwise healthy and fed. Babies cry if they are hungry or not healthy, if even after they are fed they cry, you can take the child to a Pediatrician to rule out any other diseases. Usually the colic lasts for a few months from when the baby is a few weeks old to when the baby is a few months old.

Causes of colic:

There are many theories of colic, but the bottom line is that no one knows the exact cause of colic. All that is known by people is that the baby feels some kind of discomfort and pain because of problems in the digestive system or the nervous system. Some people feel that the milk that the baby drinks is the cause of the colic. The fact remains that there is no single known cause of colic.

Symptoms of colic:

There are many symptoms that are present in a child affected by colic, but the common symptom is the crying that is said to be without any obvious reason. The baby that cries without any other reason may be because of the pain associated with the colic. The other common symptoms are:

1. The babies cry more later in the day usually in the afternoons or in the evenings. The crying may also be more sometime after a feed.

2. The baby may have the hands clenched and the legs may be pulled up to the stomach. This shows that the baby is in some sort of discomfort. This is the position that the baby with colic usually takes.

3. Eating: Eating may exacerbate the crying at most times. There are many babies who refuse feeds too. This also is considered to be a common symptom of colic.

Prevention and treatment:

There are many methods of preventing and treating a baby with colic. What every parent needs to know about preventing colic is that the baby should not be overfed as this can increase the discomfort of the baby. The baby should be allowed to burp immediately after a feed. The treatments include use of warm water baths. The baby can also be fed on a lesser concentration of artificial feed. Breast feeding the baby exclusively is the best method of reducing the chance of colic.
