Lupus is a disease that occurs because of alteration in the immune system. In fact it is considered to be an auto immune disease. In this condition, though it is not well known, the usual occurrence is the body's defense mechanism fights against the cells and tissues in the body itself. The usual method of preventing illness and diseases by the defense mechanism of the body is that whenever a bacteria or virus enters the body, the body's defense mechanism recognizes it and fights against it. In Lupus, the defense mechanism f the body thinks that the tissues and cells are the foreign bodies and fight against them.

This process causes damage to the various tissues and cells in the body. When the tissues are damaged, there can be associated inflammation to start the healing process. This is the reason why lupus is usually associated with inflammation of the joints and also various other parts of the body.

Types of Lupus:

There are four different types of lupus that is commonly seen. These are:
1. Discoid Lupus:
This is a condition in which usually the skin is the only part of the body that is affected. This makes it one of the less severe types. There can be many rashes that occur on the skin. There can also be certain other lesions in those affected by the discoid type of lupus.

2. Systemic Lupus Erythymatosis : This is one of the most common types of Lupus. It is also one of the most severe forms of the disease. This is because this kind of Lupus can affect many parts of the body including the lungs, kidneys, skin, joints and various other organs. This is a condition that can cause a lot of mortality and morbidity in the patient.

3. Lupus due to medications: There are certain medications that can also cause Lupus in a person. This causes the person to have some parts of the body affected, but this type of lupus is not very common.

4. Neonatal Lupus: This type of lupus occurs in neonates of mothers who are suffering from the systemic type of lupus when the baby is born. The baby can also suffer from various complications associated with lupus.

Treatment of Lupus:

Actually there is no cure for this condition and all the treatment that is available for a person affected by Lupus is to maintain the body functions and to prevent periods of exacerbations. There are certain treatments available to reduce joint inflammation and other problems in the person.

NSAIDS: This is the initial treatment for those suffering from Lupus. The Non steroidal anti inflammatory drugs help to prevent and also treat the inflammation and the pain that occurs in those with lupus.

Steroids: The next line of drugs that is used for patients with lupus is steroids. These drugs help a lot to improve the patient's condition by decreasing the pain and also the inflammation that occurs in various parts of the body.

These are the various types and treatments available for lupus.
