Hangover is a common problem in people who consume alcohol. Hangovers are a common reason for people to take leave from work though they cite various other reasons than hangover as the cause of the leave. Usually people consume alcohol in the late evenings or nights and sometimes due to various reasons, they consume more than what is normal for their body. This leads to hangovers.

When a person has a hangover, there are many symptoms that the person has. The problems can be very minor sometimes and sometimes, it can be very severe. The common symptoms that are seen when a person has a hangover are headache, not feeling oriented to the situation around. Some people can even have associated nausea and vomiting. So what are the causes for the hangover? There can actually be many causes and they are listed in this article.

These causes listed in this article for hangovers are directly caused by the effect of the alcohol on the body and so are called as the direct cause of hangover by alcohol.

1.Dehydration:

This is a common cause of hangover that is seen in almost all people who drink excessively. When a person drinks a lot, then there is a lot of dehydration that occurs. The person urinates a lot more and also there can be associated diarrhoea, sweating when the person is drunk. These lead to a loss of fluid from the body. When the body fluids are lost some minerals and other things are also lost leading to a feeling of light headedness and dizziness in the person who has consumed excessive alcohol. This is the first and the major cause of hangover.

Glucose levels in the body:

There is a direct effect on the glucose levels in the body when a person drinks excessively. The glucose levels can fall because the alcohol depletes the glucose levels in two different mechanisms. The first is that the alcohol prevents the formation of glucose in the body. The second method is that the existing glucose in the body is also reduced. This decreased glucose levels can lead to person feeling the symptoms of hangover that includes feeling faint and having a head ache.

Vasodilatation:

When a person consumes more alcohol than is normally consumed, it also causes an increase in the size of the blood vessels in the body. This is called as vasodilatation. This causes a feeling of dizziness in the person which also contributes for the hangover.

Acidity:

The alcohol that is consumed by a person also causes the formation of many acids in the body. These acids cause the stomach to become more acidic. In fact the acidity leads to several problems including stomach or abdominal pain. The abdominal pain can also be associated with diarrhoea at times. All these are also some of the common symptoms of hangover caused by the increased secretion of gastric juices in the stomach.

These are the various causes of hangovers. Almost all the causes of hangover listed in this article are all directly caused by the alcohol that is consumed by the individual. There are also various other causes of hangovers that are caused by consumption of alcohol but the results are not due to the direct effect of the alcohol and these are the indirect effects of alcohol causing hangover.
