Humans can live for a long time without food, but hardly a few days without water. Water is considered by some to be the elixir of life. It is one of the most important things needed for a person's survival. Good and safe drinking water is the priority of any community. The reason for this is that drinking water is good for health. There are so many benefits of drinking a lot of water that every individual should make it a point to drink adequate water every day.

Water plays an important role in most of the body functions. In fact, if this liquid was not present, most of the regular body functions will be impaired. Water is the main component of blood and makes the blood flow.

The other functions of water in the body are:

1. Water in the body regulates the temperature of the body
by cooling the system. Sweating is the mechanism in which the water from the body is excreted by the pores in the skin to cool the body under warm and hot conditions.

2. Water carries nutrients to all parts of the body through the blood. This is an indirect function of the water present in the body.

3. Water helps to keep the vital organs functioning. The liver and kidney functions will be severely affected if there is not enough water intake. Reduced water intake will result in toxic wastes being stored in the body without being excreted. This will in turn lead to kidney failure.

4. Removal of waste from our body is done by the water escaping from the body by various routes like urine, sweat, tears, breathing etc.
The water
balance has to be maintained adequately to remain healthy. When there is a decrease in the water in the body, thirst occurs which is the drive to drink water. If the water taken in is less than the water that has escaped out of the body, then dehydration can occur.

Dehydration is more common and dangerous in the very young and the very old people. In babies, due to their inability to ask for water, there can be dehydration if the care giver does not give enough water. In the older people, the thirst drive decreases, leading to increased chances of dehydration.

The best method to stay healthy is to drink a lot of water and reap the benefits of drinking a lot of water. Over drinking very high quantities of water is dangerous too, act responsibly.
