I like learning new things, doing things I've never done before. That is, I did before I met Wallpaper. Everyone has heard of Wallpaper, but not everyone knows him like I do.

-Just take this wallpaper off and then paint the room with this paint- were my instructions. Doesn't get any simpler than that, right? After all, I had a scraper, a spray bottle full of water and big strong arms. What more could I need?

The first strip came away from the wall without much effort. I found out later that was just to make me overconfident. The next million strips were microscopic. From then on, all I wanted was a start - just a little piece that I could get a hold of. Instead, I scraped and came away with tiny little bits of paper. I pressed harder and got nothing. Finally, I would get a purchase and carefully pull. The wall pulled back. I lost. At the end of three hours, I had made roughly three holes that did not have wallpaper under them.

-Use the water.- Further instructions. Thanks a lot. I was too embarrassed, proud and stupid to ask if there was a better way. I was determined to do this myself. -After you get done in here, I want you to start on the stairway.- As though -when I get done in here- meant -sometime this week-.

-OK,- I said. But it wasn't OK. Not even close.
So I sprayed the water on the wall and started scraping. This time I came away with bits of paper just as tiny, only now they were wet…and stuck to everything. I had these microscopic pieces of failure all over my arms, my shoes, my shirt, and the floor. The wall just looked at me. Wallpaper laughed. I swear he did, I could hear him.

My only bright spot came when I realized that there were two layers to Wallpaper. There was a very thin layer on the outside and a layer of yellow paper underneath. Quite by accident, I figured out that if I sprayed water on the underneath layer then let it dry, it loosened up enough that I could scrape of huge chunks of paper as big as two inches long.

Thus, having new hope and energy, I began to systematically use this method. By lunch I had one small section of the wall almost halfway done. Once again, I heard Wallpaper laughing. My boss must have heard it too, because he just shook his head and walked away.

I did not enjoy my lunch break that day. In fact, I was pretty sure I would be fired. I pondered what I was going to do for a job tomorrow.

To my delight, or as delighted as I could be under the circumstances, I was assigned a helper after lunch. She introduced herself as Robyn. When I asked her if she had ever done this she replied, -yeah, lots of times.- My prayers had been answered.

I explained how I had been tackling my job, as though I had actually made progress, then asked her, -Is there a better way to do this?-
-Nope- she replied, beginning to scrape and spray and spray and scrape the opposite wall. -Just keep at it.-

As the afternoon went on, I found out that Robyn was a nurse who had been laid off and was doing this because she had to do something to support her family. She was a single mother of two and lived not far from me in our little town. I also found out that I was becoming more and more attracted to her as we chattered.

We talked about our kids, high school, relationships, everything. When quitting time came around, it was way too soon. I wanted to work some more. In fact, I suddenly loved this job.

As we put our tools away, I glanced at the room Robyn and I had been working on and, to my astonishment, saw that all of the wallpaper was off of the wall. We had finished it.

I learned a very valuable lesson about fighting Wallpaper that day: Never do it alone. In fact, if you can find a very attractive, intelligent, enjoyable person to be your partner, you're way ahead of the game. I also learned something from Robyn about Wallpaper and about life: It's not supposed to be easy, -just keep at it.-
