Have you heard that people are changing to vegetarian diet lately? Yes, It is true. The reasons may be, meat getting expensive, concerns about the killing of animals, religious believes and also due to increase in the awareness of vegetarian diet benefits. Vegetarian diet has wide range of health benefits. The 3 main types of Non-meat eating are: Lacto-vegetarian — people who consume dairy products in addition to plant foods. Lacto-ovo vegetarian — those who eat eggs and dairy products along with plant foods. Vegan — those who eat only plant foods and avoid eating all animal products including dairy products, honey etc. Man is vegetarian by nature. Human anatomy is similar to those of herbivorous animals. Over thousand years, due to circumstances humans have turned to western diet of eating meat. Meat eating animals have short intestines, so that consumed meat is expelled quickly and the food gets digested by strong hydrochloric acid in their stomach. However, in the case of human beings, they have long intestines, and have stomach acid less powerful than meat eating animals, which make it difficult for waste to be expelled out of the body. Animals have same feeling as humans. So just imagine, they would have been traumatized and panicked before being slaughtered and at that time, several hormones would have been released in their body and humans eat that too. But in plants, there is no such mental distress. A well balanced Vegetarian diet supply all the essential nutrition for excellent health. It is vital that we eat a variety of foods from all the groups we choose that has wholesome required supplements. A healthy vegetarian meals, will ideally derive as much nutrition as possible from plant-based food sources such as vegetables, fruits, whole grains, legumes, nuts and seeds. Vegetarian meal is quick and easy to prepare. People who turned vegetarian after eating meat for a long time feel the benefits of a healthy heart, pancreas and overall physical health and endurance have increased considerably and find themselves performing better. Vegetarian Diet Health benefits include 1. Vegetarians have high Resting Metabolic Rate. So, it is easy for a person to burn fat and calories faster than meat-eaters and hence it lowers Body Mass Index. 2. Vegetarian diet cut downs fat consumption. 3. Vegetarians are less likely prone to Obesity than meat-eaters. 4. The relative leanness of vegetarians also protects them against diabetes 5. Cholesterol, which is recognized as primary risk factor in heart disease are lower in vegetarian diet. 6. With the higher fiber content in the vegetarian diet, the problems like constipation, disturbed bowel habits are lesser compared to Non-vegetarians. Also, eating fiber rich diet, is associated with lower levels of systolic and diastolic blood pressure 7. Regular consumption of fruit and vegetables protects against risk of stroke. 8. Vegetarian food involves less risk of food poisoning and other toxic substances from animal food. 9. Research has also shown that vegetarian diet offers protection against diet-related cancers. 10. Diets rich in high animal protein makes body to excrete more calcium and uric acid. It is one of the reason for gall stones formation. It can be prevented to some extent by vegetarian diet. 11. Animal products forces calcium out of the body, eating meat can promote bone loss. vegetarians are at a lower risk of osteoporosis. Plant foods are less nutrient-dense than meat, and that is an important reason to eat a balanced variety of them to get your full nutritional requirements. To obtain all the health benefits of vegetarianism, one should eat variety of foods that supply the essential nutrients, cut down too much of salt and sugar. Restrict dietary fat. Avoid greasy foods and drink plenty of water. Good sources of calcium from vegetarian foods are Orange juice, black-eyed peas, kidney beans, dark leafy vegetables such as spinach, broccoli. Tofu is also a good source of calcium. Vitamin B12 status among vegan is, on average, lower than that of non vegetarians because this vitamin is commonly consumed through animal products. It is not found in any plant products. Animal products have certain amount of this vitamin producing bacteria in them.So vegans should be advised to take a vitamin B12 supplement. The latest buzz that omega-3s, play an important role in brain, eye and nerve development. This is got more from fish, but for vegetarians, plant-derived sources of omega-3 are from canola oil, Flax oil, Hemp seed, olive oil, soybeans, pumpkin seeds. Nowadays foods are also fortified with vegetarian omega-3 sources. Eat healthy! Live happy!
