Body Mass Index is a calculation that is done to identify if the person is obese. There are very simple methods of calculating the Body Mass Index. The simplest method is to divide the weight of the person in kilograms by the square of the height of the person in meters. It can be deciphered and then decided if the person is underweight or if the person is having normal weight. It can also be identified if the person is overweight. If the Body Mass Index is more than 30, then it means that the person is obese.

The person may have high Body Mass Index because of various reasons as mentioned above. The various causes are:

1. Increased calorie intake:

The main cause of the person to have a high Body Mass Index is because of the increased calorie intake by the person. The increased calorie intake can cause various problems other than the increased Body Mass Index. The calorie intake can cause fat deposits too that can become atheromatous plaques which in turn can cause various heart diseases. The increased amount of calories that are present in the body is due to various reasons like:

a. Increased fat intake

The person who consumes a lot of fatty food like fried food and also butter, ghee and substances like this are highly prone to get a high amount of calories in the body. Most of these calories are not necessary for the body as the calories needed to meet the energy requirement are present in the regular food that is consumed. All these foods that are fried and oily give excess calories that are immediately deposited as fat. This is one of the important causes of increased Body mass Index

b. Alcohol consumption:

This is one of the methods in which a person ingests a lot of calories that are more than what is needed by the person for the regular functioning of the body. Each drink contains a lot of calories and this can increase the body mass index.

2. Lack of exercises:

The person who is not exercising adequately will have an increased Body Mass Index. This is because when there is no exercise and the person leads a sedentary lifestyle, then the person will have all the excess food stored as fat in various parts of the body. The excess fat deposits can case the person to be at a very high risk for having various diseases like stroke and cardiac problems. This is again one of the important causes of increased Body mass Index

These are some of the methods in which the body mass index of the person can increase. In fact after the age of 25, each and every person who wants to lead a healthy life should decrease the amount of calories consumed and also should exercise regularly. If this is not done, then the person will have a increase in the fat stored in the body and the body mass index will increase.
