Valentine Day - to be enjoyed for lifetimeBY: Sachin Chandran | Category: Relationships | Post Date: 2009-02-16
With 14 Feb. getting close the circular metal frame in the calendar placed in the reception of my company, which circles the current day of the month, world around seems very chaotic. People eat brains out of friends, colleagues and team mates asking ideas about a gift they should buy for their loved ones. -What should I gift to my loved one?- seems to be the most heard phrase I hear every next second if I take a walk around the cubicles of my software techie colleagues. The growing noises of gifts, Valentines Day used to give me creeps especially as it remembered me of my last year's insensitivity to this day. Last year on this particular day I had not even returned wishes when my lady love met me at a restaurant to have our casual holiday lunch together - leave aside giving her any gift. I casually told her that this day was not at all important for me to celebrate our love and togetherness. Nodding her head and still smiling she said -But it is special for me - Happy Valentines day- and gave me a gorgeous photo frame with my parents picture in a beautifully wrapped glistening paper and planted a warm kiss on my cheek. -Put it in front of your table. Every morning when you will wake up you can see them, at least you feel their presence in room now- she said enthusiastically. She knew I am very much attached to my parents living in Haryana and find it really hard to survive in Pune almost 1600 km away from them. She was really happy to see me enthusiastic holding the picture frame in my hand in spite of knowing I dint get her anything in lieu. I felt ashamed sensing that even a thought didn't cross my mind to gift her something. This year I thought I would ask my friends to suggest me something to gift that would please her. Post office hours, my two friends joined me at a coffee house close to my office. Amit was my friend from school time and Nancy a good friend and colleague. Amit like always a person who thinks only money power can sweep a girl off her feet declared -dude gift her any expensive item, nothing is better than a lavish branded item-. For Nancy I felt she was still feasting on heavy mills and boons diet -gift her a cute soft toy, flowers and chocolates-- she suggested with wistful eyes as if she was imagining her husband would bring her same. I somehow felt soft toy was not a good option considering it to be very filmy and OTT (over the top) - a typical love sick puppy idea. So after spending a couple of fruitless hours over mammoth discussions we dispersed in our respective directions. While driving back home on my bike I looked around at every passing shop and thought about every possible gift - coffee mug with our picture, watch, trousers, music CD's of her favorite artist etc. With every passing shop and shopping mall my mind was getting porcupines. As soon as I reached home my mother called me up as per our daily routine call in the evening. Jokingly I teased her and asked what was she expecting from dad this valentine. Laughingly she replied -In our times we did not have such days to celebrate, it's for you all young fellows. We don't need a day to show our love-. -What should I expect from a man who fights with me every day but still wakes up every morning to help me do daily chores before leaving to office? Who calls me everyday from office post lunch to know whether I had lunch or not. Who cribs that I am a bad cook but still takes his friend s to home for dinner often and boasts about my cooking on my back. Who becomes very restless and wakes me up when I sleep while watching his favorite programs with him. I know I am his valentine not for a day but for lifetime- she added cheerfully. I could feel her happiness as for 21 years I have witnessed their love and affection. Seen them fighting and cajoling each other while making up. My mother's sleep getting disturbed regularly at night by my dad's loud snores every night but still giving him a cheerful good morning smile. I have seen my father taking leaves and doing daily chores when my mom caught fever. Seen my father‘s face turning serene holding my moms hand and talking to her when he was sad. Their want, love, affection, respect for each other was not a secret for me and my sisters. I realized I need to love my partner everyday selflessly, care about her, respect her truly only then I can call her my valentine and celebrate this day 365 days an year without caring about materialistic gifts. Suddenly I remembered she always contracted an eye infection every time she went out in dust, pollution or near to flowers - pollen allergy. I took my bike and raced to the fast track eye gear shop and got her a nice pair at a reasonable rate. On the D day when I gifted her glares I could see she was happy but when I told her the reason behind why I got her glares I could see a sense of immense joy rushing in to her eyes. With sparkling eyes and heartfelt smile she said -Really happy that you care so much about me and got this especially caring about my eyes. Thanks for being a part of my life-. I can't describe in words how elated I was to see her happy. And now I knew that this wonderful day is not at all insignificant because every year valentine day reminds us that we should love, care, and respect loved ones selflessly till eternity.
