VIRUS is an abbreviation for Vital Information And Resources Under Siege. Actually, a computer virus is a program written by a person with the intention of causing harm to other computers. This is a program that is not downloaded by the user, but it gains entry into the computer of the user stealthily. It starts acting without the users' knowledge and slowly corrupts the files present in the computer.

Characteristics of a computer VIRUS:

It can replicate itself and add on to a lot of programs within a short span of time.
It can also spread from one computer to another by varius routes including compact discs, flash drives and other transferable data. It also spreads through e-mails. The main source of the programs and the destruction is caused by certain corrupted files downloaded from the internet.

Origin of the computer VIRUS

It is usually written by an unknown programmer. It is carried by people who do not know the presence of a virus in a certain file. So it spreads from computer to computer when files and data are transferred or copied.

It spreads in quick succession from program to another and computer to computer. In this era of information transfer where large amounts of data are transferred by millions of people everyday, there is little chance of tracing the user who first wrote the program. So the search for the source of a virus is like searching for a needle in a haystack.

Who writes a computer virus and why?

A lot of computers can be damaged if they are not protected properly from the virus attacks. Many people want to show that they are able to beat the best defenses of virus and write programs to ‘prove themselves'.

There are other kinds of people who are actually sadists and get pleasure out of the sufferings of other people. These people write programs that are viruses and will create havoc in the host computers.

The third group of people are very few in number. These people create viruses, then they themselves create a protection system and market the program. This will help them make a lot of money.

These are the different reasons for the computer virus being spread from one computer to another. This causes millions of dollars worth damage each year. It also makes people spend a lot of money to protect their system from the damage caused by viruses.
