Unconference - Where everyone participates, contributes and learnsBY: JNLakshmi | Category: Education | Post Date: 2008-10-19
According to the definition "An unconference is a conference where the content of the sessions is driven and created by the participants, generally day-by-day during the course of the event, rather than by organizers.- This is the style of conferences that has gained popularity in the IT. Barcamp, a technology unconference in Palo Alto in August 2005 was the first in this regard. It is an idea-exchange and brainstorming session of corporate communication. Unconference is based on open space tool or the social media, it is open to all the audience where given a topic, people pitch in and learn from one another. When you think about the regular conferences, what comes to mind is the agenda, the topic, presenter, people who are eligible to attend, the powerpoint presentations or pre-prepared material done by a presenter or "The boss", Everyone listens takes a note and finally wait till the audience round to get their queries answered or they would just have to email or blog their queries or comments. Unconference is that turns things around where everyone gets to participate. It is driven by the participants who suggest a topic, which they want to present or it is something they would chose to hear about. Unconference is idea sharing, demonstrating and speaking out in any professional gathering. Unconference is similar to tech-sector patterns like the group discussion. How does it run? This conference will have no particular agenda, it will just have a theme, say for example 'Internet technologies'. There will not be a single speaker, who will lead the show. Every one will participate and not have a specific list of attendees or presenters. A spontaneous topic will be given by the audience/participant based on the theme, which he would like to hear about or contribute. Say for example "Web 2.0" There will be a discussion leader who will immediately call on those in the room who have already done this and ask them to explain. There will be people in the room with handheld wireless mikes to hand it out to people who are speaking. Every body who knows about the topic will get a chance to say about it. The discussion leader then weaves together a story that the participants tell. The discussion leader will be given guidelines in advance about how to conduct the unconference. It is something like everyone will participate and contribute their thoughts and in turn learn from on another. It is infact audience will speak more than the speaker. It is not one man show, rather everyone gets a chance to say something intelligent. The best example would be the Oprah show or the talk shows on TV. The idea of Unconference is that you get a more dynamic, exchange of ideas not from a handful of selected or pre-chosen speakers but from the audience instead.Unconference leads to spontaneous bust of creativity. Several corporates are incorporating unconferences providing passionate techie, entrepreneurs an open forum for idea exchange and discussion.
