Twenty-twenty form of Cricket - 20-20 Cricket IndiaBY: vinchand | Category: Sports | Post Date: 2008-06-18
Twenty-twenty form of cricket is the latest format introduced in the Game. The game the origin of which , can be traced back to the sixteenth century, is believed to have originated even much before that as an invention of the children of the metalworking and farming communities in the Weald between Kent and Sussex.. A game very much similar to Cricket has bee reportedly played in 1300 in Kent and was known as -Creag-. In 1598, there was a Court case had referred to a game called -Creckett-, played in 1550 in The Royal Grammar School, Guildford; which could be one of the first recorded references on the game. The traditional form of Cricket is -test- match which commenced officially in 1867. The glory and popularity of the game has been growing since then. This format of the game still continues to be the best, as it is under this form, the real qualities of the players (whether one is a bowler, batsman or fielder ) could be judged. The usual format spread over five days prescribes that the players have enough stamina to perform consistently throughout the test. Having to play from about 10 AM to 5PM in the sun, with readiness to give their very best on the field almost ever moment without losing the concentration and spirit. The physical fitness, agility and talent , therefore become important criteria for a honest, fair and unbiased selection of the team. Unfortunately, this format has lost its original popularity except may be in some parts of England, Australia or South Africa. The reasons are many. With the availability of spare time to spend five whole days to watch the game either directly or through television becoming scarce due to the various preoccupations of the people who had to earn their living , the number of spectators or viewers started to diminish. Shockingly, many -great- players and Captains also contributed to the declining popularity of the game for various reasons. The Captains , in order to win a series of about 3 or 5 Test matches, manage to win one and ensure to draw all the other or the losing team also managed to draw instead of trying for a win rather than losing. Many great players ( In India we have a few such stylish greats! Some in England too!) totally ignored the interest of their team, the interest of those who are watching the game and the game itself and played only for achieving their personal milestones like maximum number of Centuries/ runs / wickets etc, bringing about drab drawn matches with no positive result in favour of their team. Only very few , like Sachin/ KapilDev had proved to be exceptions when they played as per the situation and for the benefit of the team even sacrificing their chances of personal glories. The need to wait for 5 days for a result and the -drawn- results in the end due to the above factors reduced the popularity of the game. It is high time that some practical rules are evolved for ensuring result in all test matches with suitable penalties for playing for personal milestones and drawn results. The genesis of the Limited Over version in late 60's/ early 70's was mainly for improving the popularity of the game. Initially, it was 60-overs a side, later reduced to 50 overs a side. The skills required to be sharper than what was required for test matches. It was hence an interesting version with occasional defence and attacks at times. There was no chance of Drawn matches. The thrill and excitement was good. People enjoyed. Commercial sponsoring started pouring in and the game was floating in money. Ten overs was a good challenge for a bowler to show his ability to contain the run-making and also his wicket taking ability. The batsman had to score the maximum in fewer balls but also had to remain at the crease. Fielders had to be perfect every moment. The overall thrill was superb. But when the format was further compressed to twenty-twenty, the money, sponsorships and excitement increased. Batsmen had to use brute power to score the maximum number of sixes and runs which fetched them maximum money and prizes. Bowlers had to show their talent in just four overs!. Fielders had to work overtime , having to give 150%.There was more money for each run scored or saved, for a ball which went unscored or for wickets . Each boundary of six or four had special rates and prizes. Viewers and spectators went mad with excitement.Sponsors were furious when things were not going in the direction they desired. But this version is to be played only occasionally and not very frequently.Four overs are too insufficient for a bowler to settle down and deliver. Batsmen are brutally after maximum runs throwing the decent styles to the wind thereby losing traditional skills of batsmanship when they used to play shots without the risk of getting out. Now their wild shots ,hit blindly would either land as a six, or run away for a four, if the filder is not present in the area or fails to take a catch. Skill has the least role, actually. This , in the long run will kill the traditional and glorious game. Let us all, therefore decide to bring about the right blend of the various blends of the game, retaining a modified version of test matches , popular fifty- fifty matches and a less number of twenty- twenty matches which may strictly be played only during off-season. Otherwise we will lose the great styles and skills of the game which , it acquired over centuries. Future generation will not be forced to play without any class or style.
