Cricket has been an international game for a while. It is even a multi-billion dollar business. Cricket players have become the stars and role models of the children and young people. Days when a good cricket game is scheduled, we do not see much traffic on the road, because people prefer sitting and watching cricket at home over other activities. Even in the offices, you would see people in-front of the TV provided at cafeterias, reception and at lounge rooms.

But the fact is other traditional games are being neglected because of cricket. Hockey is a national game of India. But it is not at all a popular game like cricket. The sponsors and the business people play a major role in influencing the mind of the people, in liking or disliking a game. Many of the hockey matches go without the observation of the people. Even the Media do not give much importance to the hockey. News paper reserves the top space for the cricket and the news about hockey like games fall on the bottom of the page. The achievement done at hockey does not get recognized as much as of the achievement done in cricket.

If it continues like these, our future generation would study about the traditional games only in their history books and the hockey sticks may find the place only at the museums. So we need to be taking interest to retain the traditional games. The sponsors and Medias have to give equal importance to the traditional games. The government and hockey board need to move towards making these games more popular. Even the general public should show the interest and the respect towards our National games.
