Total contact casts are applied for many reasons and the most common reasons for application include preventing the movement of the part of the body. Total contact casts are used to wrap a part of the body with Plaster of Paris material to make sure that it prevents any excess movement of a part of the body. There are various advantages of using total contact casts and this article details about the various advantages of total contact casts. The various advantages of total contact casts are: 1. Prevention of movement: This is the primary reason for the application of total contact casts. When a total contact cast is applied over a part of the body, it makes sure that the cast wraps the part completely and then makes sure that there is no movement. This is the reason for the application of total contact casts in conditions such as fractures of various parts of the body. Total contact casts are also applied after a tendon transfer surgery and also some other surgeries to protect the part of the body and to immobilize it as any movement will make the surgery to be a failure. 2. Decrease in pain: Total contact cast are also applied to make sure that there is a decrease in the pain in the part of the body. A person who has severe pain due to even a crack of the bone may have total contact cast applied. This is because when there is only a crack in a bone, it may not need to be immobilized. When there is severe pain, total contact casts may be applied to make sure that there is a decrease in the pain after the period when the contact cast is applied 3. Preventing muscle stretching: When there is a muscle paralysis, sometimes it can cause the person to have a stretch on the paralyzed muscle by the opposite group of muscles and this should be prevented or there will be the formation of a contracture. This can be prevented by application of total contact casts. 4. Ulcers and wounds: With the increased number of people suffering from wounds and ulcers because of various diseases and conditions like diabetes and other conditions that can cause peripheral nerve injury, total contact casts have had an increased role. Any wound that is on the plantar surface of the foot can be healed by application of the total contact cast over the leg as this will prevent the person from weight bearing on the surface of the wound. This prevents the wound from getting bigger and in fact the ulcer becomes smaller These are the various important advantages and also benefits of using total contact casts. Application of these total contact casts will heal wounds, prevent increase of various problems.
