What is token economy? At home we always reward the children when they finish some work. A token economy sets some targets for an individual to meet positive behavioral goal, which can be exchanged for the things they need. The tokens may be accumulated for a longer period and allowed to spend later on. The pieces of paper, coins, stickers, metal or plastic chips of various shapes may be used as tokens. The token economy should be used for positive and motivational purpose only. We should focus on things to be done within a time limit and not for stopping some activities. The person who receives a token should feel that it is worth. Then only they will get interest to do the things desired by us. We should not set the goal which is not easily achievable. We should explain all the details beforehand. Depending upon the outcome, we may increase, decrease or change the goals of achievement, as per requirement. At a time we should not set many goals and it may be limited, taking into consideration the capacity of the person. The tokens should be converted into valuable gifts, as per the desire of the recipient later on. Where token economy is used? When there is a need to change the behavior or an improvement is expected, then token economy is used in that area. At home the parents encourage the little children to learn some activities or works and give them some tokens, which may be turned as items of their taste afterwards. Next, in school token economy is used. It helps to develop the talents of children. The academic and social skills are encouraged by this method. For being first in class, for cleanliness, for finishing some classroom work with more enthusiasm, acting as a leader or captain and for engaging them usefully in free time, the children may be given some privileges, in the form of token. We have to bring everything in quantifiable form so that tokens may be issued as and when the target is achieved. Then, while dealing with mentally disabled children, the token economy will help a lot. Some patients will never like to get up from bed, even after recovering from illness. They may be encouraged to walk for some time, sit and watch TV and have a talk with others, which help them a lot for speedy recovery. The tokens may be awarded to patients that help them to increase their self-confidence. Advantages of token economy: By applying token economy principles, there could be considerable change in the behavior of mentally disabled children and there is a chance for further improvement in performing day to day activities, by them. The token economy helps a lot for school going children and there will be a healthy competition among students to earn more tokens. This will increase their knowledge to learn, act and perform better in studies and extra curricular activities. The reward given in the form of token make them feel happy. It creates a positive thought in the minds of the students to do more and makes them more responsible. There will be definitely an improvement in the health of the patients when the token economy is introduced in hospitals. The parents may fine tune the activities of the children by following the principles of token economy. The children learn the household works also. Taking the positive aspects into consideration, we may adopt token economy wherever possible.
