Tired of Email Spam - Protecting your email address from spammersBY: Jessica | Category: Others | Post Date: 2008-10-12
I check my email several times a day and when I get emails which I do not want, it really irritates me. I feel that my privacy is being violated by spammers and marketing junkies either trying to sell me something or trying to get my bank's username or password using a fraudulent website. I sincerely feel that there should be a charge for sending more than 100 emails a day, even if it is a nominal charge of 10 cents, it will be a killer step for spammers who send thousands or millions of spams per day, I don't care but something needs to be done. Way back - 7-8 years back I was a good girl and use to sincerely opt-out of marketing emails specified in the bottom of most marketing emails, little did I know that that was just a confirmation back to spammers that my emails really exists so that send more spam from other email addresses and I eventually landed up getting more spam. I know friends who had to give up on their email address due to excessive spam and were left with no choice other than to create a new email address. I will share my knowledge about protecting your email address being abused from the hands of Spammers. Lets accept you will get some spam but getting spam to a level that is easily deal-able is what I am talking about. I have tested this technique using 3 most popular web-email providers - Yahoo, Hotmail and Gmail. 1. Always have two email addresses (Primary and Secondary): Use your primary email address only for close friends and family who you know will not send you spam for sure. Additionally use this email account to receive your credit card statements, bank statements, online purchases and other very important emails only who you know will never be a spam. For all other places use your secondary email account. Secondary email account may be used for store memberships, special one time offers and all other miscellaneous items. Infact it is not a bad idea to give new friends your secondary email address, and is you find that they do not send you spam email, then later tell them that you have changed your email address and give them your primary email address. When you open your secondary email, you know that some spam will be there and you will likely not feel bad at all about it. This means you have basically avoided all those spam emails to reach your primary email address. The secondary email address can then be given up anytime if spam on it becomes unbearable. 2. Turn off image display inside emails (read emails as pure text): When spammers send you emails, they often have a unique image inside email that is loaded from their server that is used to confirm them that you have opened their email and that your email address is correct in their system. A text only email will prevent that from happening, it will suppress all HTML and images. If you feel there is a genuine email which you would like to see with images, even if you set the central option for all emails for text only, most email services give you an option in the bottom to read this particular email with full images, use that as needed. 3. Never click on links inside emails: In your primary email address, if you see an email that appears from your bank, do not click it, infact go to your bank website by typing email address by yourself. There are several swindlers who make websites similar to your bank's website and other important accounts and try to steal your login information, SSN, date of birth and man other personal information. 4. Set your Junk/Bulk/Spam email settings to medium or high catch mode: In a low catch mode most spams will reach your mailbox, to prevent it increase your setting to high or medium depending on the service you are using. 5. Never unsubscribe to a spammer - Mark it as Spam: As mentioned above spammers will often use the unsubscribe technique to confirm your email address just to send you more email. Always use "Report a Spam" button of your email provider. Email providers like yahoo, hotmail and gmail will use these votes to identify spammers and protect other people from the same. 6. Use SPAMfighter or SpamCop Free: For people using Microsoft Outlook or Mozilla Thunderbird can use the free Spam fighter to protect yourself from unwanted emails. Additionally use your antivirus to scan your incoming messages. ( I personally love AVG free). 7. Always scan attachments with Antivirus: This is more of a precautionary step but worth reading. If you have an attachment, always use the virus-free scan option to prevent unwnted viruses entering your computer. 8. Do not spread spam yourself: Do not send irritating forwards to your friends who will then lose importance of emails received from you eventually. Avoid scams like "send this email to 10 friends otherwise something bad will happen to you" types. All this is just bullshit. 9. Add trusted email senders to your address book, this will prevent them not to reach spam. Check your junk/spam email occasionally. 10. Others: Don't buy from spammers. Don't support spam-friendly internet service providers. Complicated Email Addresses Beat Spammers. Always use a free email account and not the one provided by your ISP. If you ever want to change your ISP, your emails will still be with you free on internet. Many people are not able to easily change their ISP's just because all their friends have their ISP provided email address. I hope that the things I use to fight spam myself will be beneficial to you also...
