Tips on buying a used car. Why should I buy a second hand car.BY: Jessica | Category: Shopping | Post Date: 2008-09-12
We all love the "new car smell" and the fact it's brand new gives us a better sense of reliability and security. On the other hand a used car can not only result in great savings but there are several other factors one should consider before making up their mind. 1. Avoid depreciation: As any brand new car loses value on depreciation as soon as it hits the road. The depreciation is most in the initial 2-3 years and then the value of the car falls less slowly. I personally like to buy a car which is little less than 3 years old or has about 6 months of company warranty remaining so that in case there are any unknown problems with the used car,in that case most problems will be taken care by the manufacturer (Ex: If the warranty of car is 3 years/36000 miles, I would prefer a car which is around 2.5 years old and has less than 32,000 miles on the odometer). Overall most people suggest buying a used car which is 3-5 years old. 2. Reliability: Most new cars which are manufactured today are much more reliable than old ones, so it is not wise to compare an experience of someone who brought a used car 5-10 years back and had a bad experience. Go online and there are several free websites like edmunds.com, kbb.com which can give you the reliability rating of most makes and models. You should always get a used car checked by a local mechanic, check the blue book history and take a test drive. 3. Better model or brand for same price: If you budget is 15,000 dollars, you can probably buy a Honda civic or Toyota corolla but you can get a better second hand car of higher make/model within a same price. 4. Dealer "certification": These days it is fairly common for a dealer to give you a new warranty with a used car which is pretty close to a new car warranty. It is important for you to understand what all warranty will cover before you take for granted that everything is covered. 5. Lower insurance: Since the value of car has come down, you will also pay a lower insurance. 6. Financing rates for used cars have dropped in recent years. Additional tips: - Don't buy a car which has been in a serious accident or was flooded in past. - Do not make a spontaneous decision, get the car checked by an expert mechanic, drive yourself and see the blue book history. Experian AutoCheck Vehicle History Report is also a good choice. - Don't buy a car under the car sales person's pressure. - Use the internet: Visit Used car classifieds sites such as Cars.com, CarsDirect.com, eBay.com and UsedCars.com. You can also use these printouts to negotiate price with your local dealer.
