In any household, there is a mismatch between the earning and the spending. This mismatch can be either a deficit or a surplus. For the people who have in surplus, the best way to go is to invest and multiply the surplus money. Most of the population is in the second category where there is a deficit in the earnings and spending. This article is written mainly for those people on the ways to save little by little.

The best way to save money is to differentiate between the things you need and the things you want. Once you have made a difference between the two, you can try to purchase only the things that you need.Certain things which you purchase can make a large difference in your budget. This includes recurring expenses for items such as clothes and other food stuff. Other things that make a difference are the large purchases like buying a house or a vehicle. These are large investments and need careful thought before purchase.

Some Tips

Needs are pretty simple to identify--those items that are necessary to sustain: Shelter, food, clothing, transportation. Wants are those things that enhance or possibly improve our family life. A car is a need. But a costly Sport Utility Vehicle is a want. If you cheat yourself into believing that a want is a need--and spend all your money in the process, it is a sure shot way for financial disaster.

Remember to buy less of certain things and more of others. Don't get it? Buy less of stuff which is a luxury. Buy more of stuff which are available at a discount if bought in bulk (Example is the nappy for your baby, which will not get spoilt on storing. But you get a discount when you buy in bulk.)

Do not buy for the sake of buying.

Probably you always wanted a hockey stick for yourself and were planning to learn to play hockey. But if you are realistic enough you may never play hockey if you are 50 when you purchase the hockey stick. This is just an analogue for you to understand that you should not buy something for the sake of doing it.

Housing loan/ Mortgages.

In all probability, your mortgage will be the largest single expense in your budget. Obviously, getting the best deal here is of ultimate importance. So plan early and compare different plans before plunging into it.

Price comparison before purchases:

Price comparison can help you make out that different brands may have different rates, without much difference in the quality. So before you make any major purchases like for electronic and electrical goods, compare prices between different brands and different shops before purchasing. This will help you save thousands on the long run.
