Chest pain is a common problem that many people have. As people grow old, they are more prone to various pains. One of the most severe conditions can be the chest pain. There are many causes of chest pain and most of these causes are not life threatening. Only a very few conditions that cause pain in the chest can cause the person to have life threatening problems. This article gives a list of various causes of chest pain that can mean that the person should take immediate treatment to prevent it from increasing further. The various causes of chest pain are: 1. Angina: Angina is a severe condition in which the person suffering from the problem. This is directly related to the heart and it can even be fatal in many people who are suffering from this pain. The pain need not be present only in the chest. The pain usually also radiates into the arms, usually the left arm. Angina pectoris is the other name given to this pain. It is a gripping kind of pain associated with difficulty in breathing and feels as if someone is crushing the chest. This kind of pain needs immediate hospitalization and cares to ensure that the person survives. 2. Heartburn: This is another common pain that is usually present in the chest region. People confuse the heart burn pain or the pain due to acidity to the chest pain due to cardiac causes. This is the reason for many false alarms. This is also the cause of many deaths because people who have angina pain confuse their pain as acidic pain. 3. Muscular pain: The pain in the chest can also be muscular in nature. A person who has lifted a heavy weight or has suddenly had a very highly stressful activity can have this kind of pain. This kind of pain is usually preceded by a strenuous activity and the pain is usually a dull aching pain and may also exacerbate when the person stretches the muscles. This signifies the presence of a muscular pull. Adequate rest and also icing or heat can relieve this pain over the area. Painkillers will also help in relieving the pain. 4. Rib fracture: When a person has had a rib fracture, it too can cause pain over the chest region. This is because the ribs are present all over the thoracic area. The pain is usually preceded by a trauma or a injury. This should help the person to be able to differentiate this pain from the other kinds of pain. This kind of pain, may take a longer time to reduce because of the fracture. It will decrease only after the broken and injured ribs are healed completely. Simple strapping the chest and also pain killers will help to control the pain associated with rib fractures. These are some of the most common causes of chest pain. The cardiac pain should be immediately treated and even the others should be treated because these pains can sometime mimic other kinds of pains.
