Flu is the other name for influenza. This is the common condition that is seen in many people around the world. The flu has been in the news recently because of the outbreak of swine flu around the world. All kinds of flu are similar in many ways and vary only a little. Flu or influenza has affected human race for many centuries. There are reports of epidemics caused by flu wiping out entire villages and towns. The Spanish Flu wiped out 18 million people from the face of the Earth.

Other than the Spanish flu, in recent times various other kinds of flu have affected the people. The Asian influenza in 1957 and the Hong Kong flu in the year 1968 may be fresh in the minds of some people.

Some of the basic facts of Flu are

Influenza is an acute respiratory tract infection caused by the influenza virus.

There are three types of influenza virus: Types A, B and C.

All known pandemics have been caused by influenza A strains.

The Swine flu is also of the type A virus.

The disease is usually characterized by sudden onset of chills, malaise, fever, muscular pains and cough.

Reservoir of influenza infection:

A major reservoir of the flu virus is the animals and birds. This is the reason that the avian flu was caused in man transmitted by birds. Swine flu has been transmitted to humans from pigs. There is growing evidence that the animal reservoirs provide new strains of flu virus of man animals and birds.

Source of infection: The source of infection can be a diseased person or one who is sub clinical. During an epidemic, a large number of mild and also cases with no visible symptoms can occur.

Period of infectivity: The virus may be present in the naso pharynx of the human being for a period ranging from one to two days before the onset of symptoms. It can also persist for one top two days after the onset of symptoms.

Treatment for virus:
Vaccines are being produced for viruses, but the vaccines can be made for only certain viruses that are common and can be used for research. The problems about the production for all types of viruses are that newer strains of flu viruses are identified. The vaccines for these viruses take some time to be produced, but by the time the vaccine is made, the virus becomes non virulent.

Then a newer strain of virus comes into being and the whole process is repeated again. This is the reason for vaccine to be not a very effective fight against viruses.

Other treatments:

Various anti viral drugs are also manufactured by many companies around the world. These anti viral drugs have been tried for prophylaxis and treatment of the various virus types. This treatment is mainly aimed against the Type A virus. These drugs help to modify the severity of the infection of these viruses. These drugs have not been used as a public health measure for widespread control because of various reasons.
