Bamboo is the tallest member of the grass family. The way it grows is like a grass shoot, but the only difference is that the bamboo is very tall and the stem is very strong. It can be used in many ways. In Eastern countries, bamboo shoots are a delicacy. The Indonesians use the bamboo shoots with coconut milk and spices to make a wonderful dish. The Chinese use the shoots to make a kind of liquor. Bamboo shoots can also be made into different dishes that are consumed all over the world. China grows bamboo more than anywhere else in the world. In fact China is called as the ‘Kingdom of Bamboo'. There are more than 400 different types of bamboo grown in China alone. The Chinese use bamboo as firewood, to make tiles, paper, hats, shoes and also to build houses. The Chinese use bamboo as a symbol of longevity. This is because of the fact that the bamboo stem that are used do not break down. Once it is dry, it becomes very strong and is used for the many purposes listed above. The Japanese believe that a bamboo forest that is present around a Shino shrine acts as a barrier to prevent the evil forces from entering the shrine. Thus it is used as a religious symbol too. In Vietnam, the plant symbolizes unity, adaptability and other such virtues. Bamboo grows as a cluster of plants. The shoots appear from the stem and are green. The stem becomes brown as it gets older. It is very strong and long. Because of the strength of the stem, it is used to make ladders in India. Bamboo ladders are very common and they take the weight of even an obese person. It is also used to make crutches for patients. In the developing countries, where people are poor, they may not be able to afford the metal crutches which may be costly. Bamboo crutches are made after the wood is treated. The crutch is strong enough to hold the weight of the patient while he walks with it. In India, bamboo stands for friendship. Bamboo flowers very rarely and it is believed that whenever bamboo flowers bloom, there is an impending famine. There are several other uses of bamboo plant. Bamboo plants and their uses show the adaptability of humans and their creativity in using a plant in many ways. The uses of bamboo are also so varied that they are used in different cultures for different purposes.
