Hospice care is when a person who is terminally ill and dying is given appropriate care to relieve the symptoms so that life can be lived to the fullest until death. Many people who are terminally ill opt for this kind of care. This is because of the increased quality of care and decreased costs. This is because costly equipments are not used in a hospice to prolong the life.

Advantages of Hospice:

1. The patient is given the right to make a decision: The patient makes the decision to either prolong life with artificial systems or to die peacefully.

2. Euthanasia problem solved: There is no euthanasia involved in hospice care.

3. Costs: There is a decreased expenditure for the family of the sick person. This is because hospice care cost is much less compared to the hospital care costs.

4. Support: Hospice supports both the family and the patient with varied services like counseling and other such services.

Facilities that are available in a hospice:

1. Full time:
The care and services are provided for twenty four hours. The round the clock service available relieves a great burden from the shoulders of the family.

2. The hospice helps in providing bereavement counseling for the immediate family of the terminally ill person.

3. Provides hospice care and services in the home, on an out patient basis or on a short term in patient basis. This makes it easier for the family and also the person affected, as they are able to live within their house and get the needed attention and care.

4. The hospice also employs a team of professionals from various disciplines, so that the person gets a comprehensive care. The tam can include social workers, counselors, nurses and other health professionals. The care given to the patient is also of high quality.

5. Every hospice utilizes volunteers and maintains records on volunteer use, cost saving and expansion of services resulting from volunteer use. This decreases the cost of functioning of the hospice and also makes it able to provide care for the people who are not able to pay for their stay at the hospice.

6. Hospices maintain centralized records on all patients and do not discontinue care to an individual because of inability to pay for care.

This is the reason for more and more sick and terminally ill people wanting to be in a hospice where they can have a quality life till they die.
