Vitamins are very important for the human body. Lack of vitamins in the food we eat can lead to various problems and diseases. Excess intake of vitamins may also be cause health problems. There are many vitamins that are useful for the regular functioning of our body. Vitamin E is a very important vitamin that makes the person be youthful. This is the reason that this vitamin is also called as the anti- ageing factor. Vitamin E and its function in the body: 1. It is also called as tocopherol. 2. It is very important for the normal functioning of the cells in the body. It also helps in the intracellular processes. 3. Vitamin E helps in oxygenation of the tissues in the body. 4. Vitamin E also helps to dilate the capillaries and helps in allowing the blood to flow freely into the blood deficient muscle tissues. 5. It is very important for the strengthening of the muscles and nerves because of the blood supply factor. 6. Vitamin E is essential for the prevention of abnormal blood clots that can lead to strokes. It does not prevent the normal clotting of the blood. Other uses of Vitamin E 1. Old age: It contributes to a healthy old age with the person feeling strong and fresh. 2. Menopause: Vitamin E helps in preventing sleeplessness and mental tension during the time of menopause. 3. Sterility: Vitamin E has been used successfully in the treatment of sterility. 4. Varicose Veins: Vitamin E has been found to prevent clots and thus reduce the incidence of varicose veins. Sources of Vitamin E: Vitamin E can be found in various natural foods. Some of the sources are cold pressed crude vegetable oils. This is found in wheat germ, sunflower seeds, safflower, soya bean oils. Eggs, butter, sprouted seeds and whole wheat are all sources of this Vitamin. Vitamin E is also found in meats, fruits and green leafy vegetables which provide smaller quantities of this Vitamin. Deficiency of Vitamin E: Vitamin E or Tocopherol deficiency in the human body can cause various serious complications. The problems that can be caused by Vitamin E deficiency are: 1. Degenerative changes in the blood capillaries. This degeneration can further lead to heart and lung disease. Pulmonary embolism and stroke are common in the deficiency of this Vitamin. 2. Impotence has also been observed as a condition that occurs in decreased levels of Vitamin E in the body. 3. In both females and males, it can lead to muscular disorders. 4. Miscarriages, abortions and reproductive disorders are common in tocopherol or Vitamin E deficiency. Daily intake of Vitamin E: 15 milligram in men and 12 milligram of Vitamin K in women should be consumed as part of the diet. For children, the consumption should be at least 8.3mg. Precaution: When large amount of Vitamin E is given, it could cause complications. Vitamin E is not toxic and there are no known complications of excess intake of Vitamin E. In spite of this, it is better not to take Vitamin E supplements. These Vitamin supplements should be taken only if prescribed by a registered medical practitioner.
