Breast feeding has been known to be one of the best methods of feeding the child health wise. In developing countries and for people who live in the lower socio economic category, breast feeding is a boon that helps them to reduce expenditure. In fact the World Health Organization has been propagating the idea of exclusive breast feeding where a mother breast feeds the baby exclusively for at least 6 months.

After the period of exclusive breast feeding the baby's diet can be supplemented with other foods. This article lists the various health benefits related to breast feeding the child.

1. Cancer:

Mothers who breast feed their child have been known to have a lesser risk of getting ovarian and also breast cancer. This is one reason why women should breast feed regularly. The fact that breast feeding is not only beneficial to the child but also the mother should act as an impetus to make more women breast feed their child.

2. Nutrition to child:

Another important but well known benefit of breast feeding is the availability of the most nutritious food for the baby on Earth. The breast feeding of a child will make the child more immune to various diseases. This is not only during the immediate phase after the birth of the child, but also throughout life. There are studies that have shown that children who are breast fed are healthier when compared to those who have not been breast fed.

3. Reduced loss of blood during menstruation:

Women who are breast feeding their child have a reduced loss of blood during menstruation. This fact is very helpful for the mother because of the fact that the mother may already be weak after the birth of the child. The loss of blood being decreased during menstruation in breast feeding mothers helps the mothers to be stronger.

4. Safer:

The mother's milk available to the baby after the birth of the child is safer than any other preparation and also other milk available. The mother's milk keeps the child safer. This is another important health benefit to be considered by young mothers.

5. Intelligence:

Other than the health of the child, the mental status of the child is also affected by the breast feeding. Children who have been breast fed regularly and for a long period of time have been found to have more intelligence than children who have had lesser breast feeding.

6. Bonding:

Other than the benefits listed above, the mother and the child start sharing a special bond from the time of breast feeding. Children who have been breast fed for a longer period of time has a closer bond to their mothers.
