The use of chemicals in farming and agriculture has resulted in an increased intake of chemicals by humans. This increased intake of chemicals has in turn resulted in many deleterious effects to the human body. The effects of chemicals on human health are very damaging. It can lead to a host of health problems that can even be fatal. Insecticides and pesticides used for agriculture can be eaten if the food especially vegetables and fruits are not thoroughly washed. Chemicals can also enter the human body through the skin, nose, eyes and mouth. Effect of chemicals on human health: The toxic residues of the chemicals can affect the central nervous system, liver and respiratory organs. Pesticides can cause depression, insomnia, blindness, cancer, hyperflexia and other gastrointestinal problems. The chemicals can also mix with the ground water through seepage into the soil that may be consumed ultimately as drinking water. 1. Birth defects: There are many birth defects that have been seen in babies born in places near agricultural areas. The babies can have circulatory problems and also respiratory problems. There can also be babies born with malformations in their extremities 2. Brain damage: The children born in these areas where there is a increased use of chemicals are prone to have decreased Intelligence due to brain damage. The chemicals mainly affect the nervous system leading to these problems. 3. Fetal death: Exposure of pregnant women to pesticides can increase the risk of fetal death. There can be stillbirths occurring as a consequence of these chemicals. 4. Miscarriage: There is a increased risk of miscarriage if the pregnant woman is exposed to chemicals in the third to eighth week of pregnancy. 5. Brain tumor: Tumor or cancer of the brain is more common in people who have been exposed to various chemicals. 6. Birth defects: Hydrocephaly, cleft pallets are some of the common birth defects due to exposure of the pregnant woman to chemicals. It can also result in low birth weight of babies, lower body length. It can also invade the milk produced by the lactating mothers. This leads to a high-risk nutrition to the infants leading to more health problems. The potential effects of chemicals on human health have far reaching effects. This makes it imperative that we cut down on the chemicals used in food. The best method of reducing the ill effects of these chemicals is to avoid food that has been grown with the use of pesticides. Organic food is a healthy alternative.
