The dangers of total contact castsBY: Deena David | Category: Health and Fitness | Post Date: 2009-11-25
Total contact casts are one of the best methods of treating various conditions such as fractures and also various types of wounds and ulcers. Though these are the best methods of treatment, they have certain side effects and complications when they are used. Every person should know about the various side effects of total contact casts as this will help them to be able to identify the problem early and report so that the complication can be reversed or treated adequately. The various dangers of total contact casts include the following: 1. Stiffness: When a person has a total contact cast applied, it can lead to a complete immobilization of the part of the body and when this happens, the person will not be able to move the joint and any joint that is not able to move through the full range will have a chance of becoming stiff and this is one of the complications of a total contact casts. 2. Nerve compression: Another important and also a common problem that is seen in people who have had a total contact cast applied to them is the nerve compression that can occur. There are many nerves that are superficial and these nerves that lie just under the skin are more prone for compression. When a total contact cast is applied to a part of the body, the edges of the total contact cast can compress the nerve that is superficial and this can lead to damage of the nerve if the total contact cast is not removed promptly. 3. Decreased blood supply: When a total contact cast is applied over a part of the body, the cast has to give adequate protection to the part and also immobilize the part of the body. This is the reason for applying the cast tightly around the part of the body. There are times when the total contact cast is applied too tight and this can hinder the blood supply to the more distal parts of the body. This can also cause very serious problems like Volkmans Ischemic contracture where the blood supply is lost and the whole part, which has decreased blood supply, dies and loses function. 4. Injury within the area where the total contact cast is applied: This is another important risk that is present when a total contact cast is applied. The person who has the contact cast applied may have friction between the part of the body and also the edges of the total contact cast. This can cause friction and pressure injuries in the area covered by the cast. This can be prevented by giving adequate padding while applying the total contact cast 5. Demineralization of bones: Usually the a total contact cast is applied for a few days only. There are times when the cast is applied for a longer period and this can cause the person to develop weakness in the bone as it has been rested and the person may be prone to stress fractures because of demineralization of the bone in the covered area. This is very common in the lower limbs. Article Source: http://www.saching.com About Author / Additional Info: I have completed my Masters Degree in Paediatric Nursing.
