I was attending a marriage that day with all the festivities going around and everybody discussing that what a fine match the girl's side has procured for their daughter. The boy was the only son and had nice job with an MNC earning in lakhs. The match was suggested by an acquaintance and everything was finalized within a week. It was then that a thought came to my mind.

What is the purpose of getting married? Is it to have a new family or to get settled or just a duty for parents so that they can get relived of their responsibility? But if we think are these really the reasons?

In India girls generally get married by the age of 20-25 which means that more than 60% of their life is to be spent with the person with whom she is to get married and so is a week's time enough for taking this kind of a decision. Certainly not. I think that the most important reason to get married is to find a companion for life. A person with whom we can be ourselves with no pretenses. It is the most valuable relation of our life. Through that only we bring new lives into the world. But this most important thing is always neglected. We marry because of societal pressure, to please others and somewhere also to please ourselves that we have settled for good. A kind of complacency is settling in.

But I think that we all must give it a thought. Life is very precious and we should treasure it. We should share it with a person who is deserving of us, who can value our likes and dislikes , who can be like pillar of strength in testing times and marry you for the sake of having a companion in life and not with a person who marry just for the sake of pleasing others.Marrige should not only be union of two families or two persons but it should also be a union of two souls.

So I just hope that persons reading this will surely give it a thought as it's a question of a lifetime.
