Some of us are unaware of the gravity of the poverty in our world. Some people choose to know and involve themselves on charity works and raising funds. Some see it everyday and try to help alleviate the unfortunates' agony momentarily. Some do nothing, and some just cover their senses and pretend that poverty is nonexistent.

But in this article, I'd like to share a very different scenario about poverty that was personally experienced by my mother. It has deeply touched my heart, has changed my perception of small things and poverty itself, and has opened my mind to understand the great fortunes of the unfortunates.

My mom and her two comrades went out and got-together one time. They decided to eat at a famous Chinese restaurant that serves really good, mouthwatering dishes at the right price.

Their orders were a wok of fried noodles, three other viands, each is intended to serve 2-3 persons, and some refreshments to quench their thirsts. They were literally having a small feast and merriment when a family of four consisting of a father, a mother, a toddler and a baby came in. Their clothes were obviously old and faded, and the couple seemed a little timid. The server greeted them with a smile and accompanied them to a table. She handed them the menu and took their order.

After a while, an aroma of a hot pancit bihon, a Filipino recipe, which are thin rice noodles fried in soy sauce added with sliced meats (chicken and pork) and chopped vegetables (cabbage, celery, red bell peppers and carrots) whiffed in the air.

My mother's eyes followed that tray and it led them to the family's table. They were served with a plate of pancit bihon, good for two servings, and a bottle of soda. With their happy faces over their meal, they started singing a quiet ‘happy birthday song' to the baby. It happened to be the baby's first birthday. After singing, they clapped their hands and started eating, offering the baby the first taste of the noodle, and the first sip of the soda.

With all the people in the restaurant having plenty of great food in their tables, including my mom and her comrades, there was still no doubt that that family was the happiest, and at the highest level of content for what they have - the pancit bihon priced 100 Php (Philippine Peso) , a bottle of soda priced 25 Php and each other -- priceless.
