The dowry system is a great evil gnawing Indian society. Marriage has become a money-making business. Its sanctity has been lost for ever. The fault lies with our ancestors who introduced the system but the main culprits are its followers. Supply and demand for dowry is illegal in India. But all citizens of India turn a blind eye to it. Dowry should not be a compulsory payment nor optional. The conventional dowry stem in India must be prohibited fully at any cost due to the following reasons: Social issues It is said that the dowry system is the root of all evils in the society. It is a great setback on the women empowerment programmes. Much of the misery and corruption in India is traceable to the dowry system. It is equally responsible for wide disparity in wealth between the rich and poor. Dowry is mainly given for family welfare and security. The parents know the fact that women are being tortured in the name of dowry. Why we should allow our daughters to come about all these? Indeed greedy men may demand more time after time. Productivity Men who demand more cash from spouse's house tends to be less productive in future. They remain idle in offices or waste their time. They may waste money in restaurants or bars or find some other pleasures. It badly affects their health too. Most of the psychologists are of the view that the dowry system weakens the self-esteem and self-respect of men in one way or another. Sustainable development India is the latest consumer of gold in the world. Gold is mainly purchased for marriage purposes in the country. If gold is consumed on a large scale, our gold mines would soon be devoid of gold. We should consider future generation for sustainable development. Sustainable development means serving both present and future generations at its best. Let's abolish the dowry system for the common wheel or otherwise continue to be bachelors as before.
