Temper tantrums in children: How to handle?BY: Deena David | Category: Family | Post Date: 2009-07-12
Temper tantrums are sudden outburst or violent display of anger, frustration and bad temper as physical aggression or resistance. The resistance can be in the form of rigid body, biting, kicking, throwing objects, hitting, crying, rolling on the floor, screaming loudly and other such activities. These are some of the things that we commonly see in many children. These are the temper tantrums that kids can throw. Every parent needs to know how to handle them. Temper tantrums mainly occur in maladjusted children. Their tantrum is not directed at any particular person or anything. It is directed generally at the environment. This is actually a normal phenomenon in toddlers. It may also continue in to the pre school age in some children. Sometimes, it can become severe. This shows the low tolerance level of the child. Temper tantrums are mainly found in boys, single children and pampered children. This mainly occurs when the child is not able to integrate the normal impulses to the demand of reality. The child reacts violently to this by throwing a tantrum. Prevention and treating your child's temper tantrums: Professional help: If the tantrums continue or become uncontrollable, then the parents have to seek professional help. The parents also need some education about the tantrums. They should be able to identify when the tantrums start and when they end. This help can be sought from child guidance clinics. Parents role: The parents should play an active role in controlling the temper tantrums. Parents should try and provide alternative activities at the time when the child is throwing a tantrum. No one should make fun of or tease the child. Loving approach: Physically trying to restrain the child at the time of a tantrum usually increases the tantrum. Instead, the child should be left to release the anger and be approached calmly. Behavior of parents: The parents should have consistent behavior at times of tantrums. They should deal in the same way at all times. After the child throws a tantrum, the face and body is washed. Activities: Diverting the child with vigorous physical activities will help in reducing the temper tantrums. This will also keep the child occupied for a longer period of time. These are some of the activities that will help control or prevent the temper tantrum in children. Most children outgrow these tantrums, but a few of them may continue to throw tantrums. These children will benefit from professional help and also by adopting the methods seen above.
