The issue of traffic congestion has been a subject of great deal of study and interest in recent times. It is a unique, serious and common problem among the major cities in various countries throughout the world. Traffic congestion is a part of problems associated with urban development, the other problems of urbanization being homelessness, restlessness and loneliness. Movement of population towards cities for better opportunities and better life style has created its own unique problems among the major ones like ‘climate changes' and the present civilization is struggling to find solutions. Given its ongoing pervasive effect on urban residents, both real and perceived, these problems have been a very important political issues in recent times. The causes of traffic congestion are various and common among major cities, like more people drive further and far, limited transport choice, high density of vehicles per unit of road availability, limited transit service, scattered and unplanned development of cities. The growth of population and vehicles always outs numbers and out sizes growth of surface transport facilities. ‘Russia has two problems, fools and roads' wrote the famous writer Nikoloi Gogol almost twenty years ago. Mumbai City is bustling with 18 Million people, population more than population of countries like Greece, Belgium, Netherland and Portugal. Time taken in traveling 8 KM in Mumbai is equal to time taken for traveling 117 Km. in New York. But Newyork is also not free of traffic congestion problems like any other major cities such as London, Tokyo, Sao Paulo, Mexico, Paris, Singapore or Hongkong, they all have their unique traffic problems to deal with. The traffic congestion has a vicious effect on mental and physical health of urban population, their family life and relations. Loss of great deal of time and energy in such a unproductive manner leaves us empty and unfulfilled. This in turn has its vicious cycles of ill effects on the society and population at large. The solutions are not simple but nevertheless are within realm of possibility. First and formost is for the executive power to form a firm policy of sustainable development of cities. A sustainable has been defined by International Centre of sustainable cities that - enhances and integrates the economical, social, cultural and environmental wellbeing of its current and future generations- (ICS 2006). Such attempts to decongest the over populated cities and construct new ones have been made by successive executive powers but with limited success. If New Mumbai is partially success story of planned development , New ventures and ideas like Lavasha have yet to pass the critical test. Some of New and sustainable cities have been built are New Songdo City in South Korea, Dongton Eco City in China and GIFT in Gujrat India. For the older cities, there is no way but to bear the pain of redevelopment. In long term serious and fast execution of sustainable projects. In short term, more efficient administration to deal with day to day traffic problem, bold, transparent and sustainable traffic and vehicle policies and their execution, better infrastructure, more and dedicated public transport and judicial law enforcement are the key solutions for traffic problems. The problem is large and solutions are not simple but we have to create or convert to sustainable cities to overcome the problem of traffic congestion.
