Bengal has always had a strong link with the Indian history, whether its just history, or history of culture, journalism, sports, etc. So today, when Bengalis have made their presence felt throughout the globe in some way or the other, I take the opportunity to compile an honorary article on Bengalis who have made us (the Bengalis, the nation and the world) proud time and again.

First up, obviously, Rabindranath Tagore, no prizes for guessing. This is the man who had secured for India, a place in the world literary scene. He is the first recipient of the coveted Nobel Prize in Asia, in 1913 for Geetanjali. He was a multifaceted personality, who penned poems, dramas, short stories and novels. He famously declined the knighthood that he received from the British government, as an act of protest against the Jalianwala Bagh massacre.

Satyajit Ray (director) & Uttam Kumar (actor) are the two eminent and respectable pillars of Bengali cinema who evoke pride among all Bengalis. The former is the first and only recipient of the Oscar award under the ‘lifetime achievement' category for extraordinary accomplishment in the world of cinema, while the latter has such an impression on the minds of Bengalis that he has before his name the title of ‘Mahanayak. He is the most popular actor still in Bengali cinema undoubtedly. He has also acted in two of Satyajit Ray's films. ‘Devdas' and ‘Nayak' are two of his many landmark films. He has under his belt many prestigious awards for his unparalleled acting.

Neither the last but nor the least - Amartya Sen. A Nobel Prize winner economist, Amartya Sen has made Bengalis proud recurrently. He is a fellow of Trinity College, Cambridge and a professor of philosophy and economics at Harvard University. He has won accolades for his work on poverty, famine and gender inequality. The famous work of decoding the cause of famine gained him extreme respect and he won the Nobel Prize in 1998 for welfare economics.

We all are familiar the infamous saying that is attributed to the olden times and that's ‘Old is Gold'. So it's definitely not expected that Bengalis who have made us and are still making us proud are comparable with the present day personalities. Nonetheless these individuals deserve mention without any doubt.

To start with, the Prince of Kolkata, Sourav Ganguly… He has shown the world what Bengalis are made of. This man has gained respect, fame, status and what not. The former captain of the Indian national cricket team, and the icon player of Kolkata Knight Riders, Sourav has under his belt the credit of teaching the team to win overseas. The creator of ‘Team India', ‘Men in Blue', the man who put in the right amount of optimism in the team, Ganguly has gone through bad patches and but has fought back each time which has made him a real fighter. He truly deserves a thumbs up.

Bipasha Basu is one of the most prominent actresses in India and around the world. She is the one who has successfully broken the monopoly of the fair skin. Though she has played a glamorous role in quite a number of films, she has exhibited her acting skills in films like Corporate and many others. This Bong bombshell has portrayed a role of a non-resident Bengali in her first Bengali film, ‘Sab Charitro Kalponik'. She has up her sleeves the acknowledged label of ‘The sexiest Asian' too.

Other Bengalis of today who are worthy of a mention surely are Shaan(singer), Kumar Sanu(singer), Rani Mukherjee(actress), Arun Lal(sports person), Baichung Bhutia(soccer player).

• The entire work consists of purely personal views of the author
• If the reader feels some other Bengali whose name has not been mentioned should have been named, refer to the above stated point
