TERROR STRIKES BACK!! Terrorist attacks in India.BY: Rohini Upreti | Category: Others | Post Date: 2008-09-17
Is India safe any longer as it has become a soft target of terrorist attack? There have been four terrorist attacks this year, in Jaipur (May), in Bangalore and Ahmedabad (July) and last but not the least in Delhi (September). Which city will be next on the agenda? After each blast the government says it will take some tougher measures but the terrorists continue to strike at will and get away with it leaving behind a sense of hopelessness and fear. Terrorists are using hi-tech measures, Chinese handsets and SIM cards which are used and discarded and email ids which are created minutes before the email is sent and then discarded. WI-FI network is being secured and hacked to send email. Emails are being sent before the blast challenging the administration to save the people if they can. Attacks target busy areas like bustling popular market places to bring about maximum damage to human life. Who are these faceless miscreants who have the right to slaughter innocent civilians until they get their so called justice. Terrorism is the use of terror or violence against the government, individuals and the public to achieve certain objective. It is an organized network of violence and intimidation to settle scores. Terrorism has assumed global proportions and is no longer a regional problem. Terrorist outfits do not operate in isolation and have their tentacles spread all over the world. The need of the hour is to have a very strong All India Anti-terrorist agency, a special network recruited to be constantly vigilant so as to counter any terrorist attack. It should be given powers like wiretapping of conversation, surveillance of computer and electronic mail. A powerful network of close circuit hidden cameras should be installed at road crossings, busy market places to detect suspicious activities, special offices should be created with officers to monitor the cameras and keep a vigilant eye on any suspicious behavior. There should be certain paid informers from among the general public like rag pickers, who can at times provide vital clues in order to avert a catastrophe. As citizens, it is our moral duty and responsibility to keep a watchful eye on any unattended goods or packets and inform the police if we come across it. Special numbers, to which people can report on seeing such objects, should be flashed on the news channels from time to time or should be sent through SMS to the public by the administration. Existing laws are soft on terrorism and some stronger measures are the need of the hour. The government and the opposition are not unanimous regarding terrorism. The political parties should iron out their differences and together amend the constitution to undertake certain tough measures so as to fight terrorism and make our nation secure. The blame game continues between the government and the opposition, directed at securing their vested interest, the innocent public faces the trouble and the terrorist remain at large. After 9/11, US took some tough steps and fighting terrorism became their top priority. New security measures regarding travel, work and recreation were adopted. US agencies and the local government geared up to meet this challenge. Congress passed a bill that expanded police powers. A new cabinet level department, the Department of Homeland Securities (DHS) was created to prevent terrorist attack in the US. The DHS combined dozens of federal agencies representing the largest reorganization in the federal government. The world is gearing up for the menace called terrorism…we are time and again becoming victims of this dreadful menace…lets take some concrete steps…it's never too late…we have to triumph over the feeling of fear and uncertainty that surrounds us, every time we venture out, today.
