TEACHING ENGLISH TO NON-NATIVE SPEAKERSBY: MEENA | Category: Education | Post Date: 2009-11-19
Well, I was talking about teaching English to non-native speakers. It is quite a difficult task, as there are a lot of factors which contribute to this. First and foremost, most of the learners, especially grown-ups, are too shy to express even what they know, let alone the new words that they had picked up. They are more conscious of the surroundings, what people would think and how they would react. They are more bothered about whether they would be laughed at.
Then, there is the influence of mother-tongue on them. I mean they try to translate literally word by word from the mother-tongue. In most of the cases, the structure adopted is Subject+object+Verb. But in the case of English, it is usually Subject+verb+object. So, this makes a lot of difference in their usage of the language.
The best way to overcome all these problems is by trying to teach a language from the young age itself. It is known to all of us that a child who is less than twelve has more grasping power than the grown-ups. that is how, we usually find children pick words and style of rendering during their kindergarten days or at primary level more easily than while they are in the high school. Teachers should try to teach them through games or in a playful method. If we include more of practical classes, it would have more effect on the students as what he/she learns would stay longer in his/her mind .
In case of grown-up learners, the need to learn would create a more impact on them. If they are placed in a situation where learning or speaking is a must, then they would definitely try to pick up the language. Always, the need is one of the most significant factors of learning.
