Swimming is an activity that can be viewed in many ways. For some people it is a method of exercising. For others, it is a pastime. A few may even think it is a waste of time. Very few people know all the benefits of swimming. There are countless medical and psychological benefits of swimming.

Swimming is an activity that is one of the best exercises. The reasons for this are many. They are listed out below:
1. All muscles are exercised: In swimming, all the muscles are exercised. People have to use the whole body to swim. In cycling and walking, mainly the lower limb muscles are used. There is limited use of upper limb muscles. But in swimming, there is a nearly equal use of al the muscles.

2. Refreshing : Swimming is a refreshing activity. It is also enjoyable. Most people rarely think of swimming as an exercise. It is preferred to exercises such as cycling and walking. This is true mainly in the case of children. Most kids are in fact excited at the thought of swimming. This is the reason that swimming in incorporated in many exercise programmes. This makes the kids feel that are having a nice time, while actually it acts as an exercise too.

3. Improves cardiovascular fitness: While swimming, there is a generalized increase in the circulation of blood. This leads to an increased feeling of well being. This also improves the functional level of the person. Regular swimming in fact reduces the risk of the person getting cardiac diseases.

4. Fitness: The person who regularly swims is actually very fit than even people who exercise regularly with all sorts of fancy equipment. This is because swimming is a very high calorie burning exercise. This reduces excess fat in the body and keeps the individual fit and healthy.

5. Less chance of injury: In any activity that is done as an exercise, there is a risk of injuring oneself. Injury is one of the common problems of any sport or exercise protocol. In swimming, the chance of any muscular or bony injury is very less. So it is highly recommended for people especially with weak muscles and weak bones.

These are the benefits of swimming. Since this activity has a large number of positive effects, it should be recommended as a regular exercise for people who know swimming and for those for whom swimming pools are available. This will help the individual to be fit and prevent from getting some of the common diseases.
