Smoking habit: Addiction of smokingBY: Jessica | Category: Health and Fitness | Post Date: 2009-07-03
We all agree that smoking is an extremely bad habit which can cause emphysema, heart disease and even cancer. This is a habit that can cost hundreds of dollars in a year. Smoking can cause our life span to be reduced by 10 to 15 years. It is surprising why so many people are still not willing to give up smoking. This is because smoking is not just a habit, it's a deadly addiction. The addiction of smoking is easy to adopt but very hard to let go. Although we mostly see adults smoking around, the fact is that majority of individuals start smoking when they are teenagers. Infact several statistics suggest that 90 percent of all smokers get into the addiction of smoking by the age of 19 years. Many people think that cigarettes which contain nicotine helps them to relax. Teenagers think smoking is a fashion symbol that makes them appear a more tough and mature person. They think that smoking sets them apart into an elite group, apart from other regular teenagers. Many teen smokers start smoking because someone in their group smokes and they were repeatedly offered and insisted to try. In fact the biggest reason people start smoking is because of their peers. Individuals whose parents smoke have a higher chance to catch this addiction. Often girls start smoking because they have a misconception that smoking will make them lose weight. The fact that smoking can cause loss of appetite in some cases but the chances that it will leave you an illness is much bigger. Smoking is a major threat to health and is turning out to be a big public health problem. The addiction of smoking is extremely hard to quit, may be even harder than quitting other addictions like alcohol and some other drugs. Thinking that you can try smoking for a few days and then simply quit should never be an option. The body gets addicted to smoke very quickly, so it's better not to try smoking even once. Nicotine is addictive just like heroin and cocaine, the brain just gets use to of it. A person feels normal only after he has taken his smoke. Advertising of cigarettes has been one of the most successful campaigns ever. It is hard to believe that how these ads were able to convince a smelly and expensive habit into a sophisticated, elegant, powerful and glamorous act. A lot of adults in the 40's see a lot of TV commercials and movies when their favorite actor/actress smoked and presented it to be glamorous. Thankfully these ads have been crushed in most sensible countries, infact most of the movies do not even include smoking scenes anymore. Infact, many health organizations run Ads not to smoke and that how dangerous it can be to smoke. Government has banned advertisements of cigarette companies on TV, newspapers, public places, billboards and even in most public transportation. They have also increased tax on cigarettes heavily and used that money towards improving the health of its citizens. There are also limits in most countries which prohibits selling cigarettes to minors. Smoking habit is not a natural thing for our body. Human beings need good food, clean water and exercises to remain healthy, but not smoking. Cigarettes contain carbon gases, nicotine and even small traces of cyanide. We all know that large doses of these chemicals can kill us. When we start smoking, our body literally fights back by causing throat pain, headache and nausea. But dedicated smokers train their body by repeatedly exposing themselves to the smoke till it gets use to. These people do not realize and soon enough they will fall in the trap of smoking addiction. But all these harmful ingredients of smoke take their toll in a long term. they act like a slow poison for the body. Without they realizing, the smoking habit slowly damages their lungs, can cause heart disease, cancer and other organ damage. Teeth and lips of smokers become darker. Can you imagine the condition of lungs .. regular smokers have black lungs from inside. Smokers cannot live a normal life, cigarette is on their mind every now and then. They need cigarettes for thinking, to keep their anger under control and some people cannot even go to the restroom in the morning without smoking. Every time you smoke, you lose 5 to 15 minutes of your true life span.Smoking habit takes it's toll and thats why there are hundreds of multi million dollar companies who offer products that assist ending the addiction of smoking. Most adults who started smoking in their teens never expected to become addicted. Smoking habit not only damages teeth but also all the bones of our body suffer. This is because several harmful ingredients from smoking dissolve in our blood and flow all over the body, reducing the supply of oxygen to our organs. Smoking also increases the chances of osteoporosis which causes the bones to be weaker and fragile. Smoke effects our sexual organs too, males often have weaker erection and women can have troubles with fertility and thus conceiving a baby is difficult. A smoking mother can cause tremendous damage to her child when the baby is still in her womb. All those toxic chemicals we discussed earlier, do flow from mother's body to the childs body to some extent. Common social and health problems of smoking are: * Bad breath: People who do not smoke cannot withstand the smell coming out of a person's mouth just after he smoked a cigarette. These people also have bad smelling hair and clothes. * Bad Skin: Since smoking causes lesser nutrients and oxygen being supplied to the skin cells, their skin ages faster. Their skin looks unhealthy and these individuals tend to have wrinkles much earlier in life. * athletes and sports person can see a retarded performance. * Longer healing time after injuries. * Smokers tend to get more flu, cold, coughs, bronchitis etc than non-smokers. * Smoking can cause cancer (about 60 chemical agents present in cigarettes are known to promote cancer). * After smoking, brain reacts by releasing chemicals that promote pleasure and energy, but within 30 minutes it fades causing a person to feel low and energyless. * Increases cholesterol level. * Smoking can cause liver damage and ulcers. * Children exposed to smoke are at a higher risk of sudden infant death syndrome. Other deadly facts about smoking: * Millions of people all over the world die because of their smoking habits. * It takes just 30 seconds for nicotine to reach the brain. * It can contribute to stroke and other heart related diseases. * Cigarette companies manipulate the level of nicotine so that person gets addicted to smoking much quickly. * Quitting smoking is tough, a person may experience anger, negative feelings and short temper during the process. * Second hand smoke is equally dangerous. * Cigarette smoking is the number one cause of lung and throat cancer. * The practice began as early as 5000 - 3000 BC. We should understand that smoking habit is extremely dangerous and it is not easy to come out of the addiction of smoking.
