Sleep is always associated with rest. People who sleep a lot are considered lazy. Sleep itself is associated with laziness. When the society at large has such views, people are bound to actually think that people who sleep a lot are lazy and it can lead to a host of health problems. This may be partially true. But are we giving the respect sleep needs? How much sleep does a person need? What happens when someone is deprived of sleep? Are there any health consequences of working late every day? These are some questions for which most of do not know the answer. If we had actually known the answer to these questions, we may not be behaving the way we are. This article demystifies the sleep habits of people. 1. Accidents: When a person does not sleep for a long time say for 24 hours, and is either working or just staying awake without work, it causes a lot of changes in the body. None of these changes are beneficial to the body. People become confused in the immediate phase. Mistakes can be made. In fact most of the accidents that occur may be due to the sleeplessness of drivers who are driving. Sleeplessness causes the reflexes to decrease. This leads to drivers not being able to make split second decisions leading to increased number of accidents. 2. Workplace: Adequate rest and sleep will make a person be more productive at work. When someone has not had enough sleep, it increases the chances of making errors. The productivity of the person may decrease dramatically with increasing sleep loss. 3. Health: Lack of adequate sleep may also lead to various health problems. It can cause increased stress leading to stress related problems like stomach ulcers. It can also cause headaches. Hypertension may also be seen in people with adequate sleep loss. There are scores of health problems related to sleeplessness. 4. Other problems: Sleeplessness if uncontrolled can lead to loss of jobs if the person is unable to concentrate in the workplace. It can lead to distress in the family due to disturbance within the family. The disturbances may be because the other members may be disturbed during their sleep. It also could be because the stress of sleeplessness which can lead to unrest and quarrels within the family. There can be major health problems if the insomnia or lack of sleep is chronic. For people who are unable to sleep, it would be best to consult a Physician as soon as possible. This will prevent any unnecessary stress and heartache in the family.
