Simulations: Real life situation teaching methodBY: David Prakash Kumar | Category: Education | Post Date: 2009-07-20
Simulation is a teaching technique used mainly in management education and training in a ‘real life situation'. Here the real characters are substituted with similar characters. Some educators consider simulation as a technique in education where students act out or role play teaching situations in an attempt to make learning more practically oriented and realistic. Simulation creates an environment resembling real life situation which helps the student to practice and gain experience in a real life situation so that they can practice more confidently when they face the actual situation. Types of simulations: 1. Simulation exercise: A controlled representation of a piece of reality that learners can manipulate to understand the real situation better. The learner will be able to change the situation present in the simulation. 2. Simulation game: This is a game that represents a real life situation in which the learners compete according to a set of rules in order to win or achieve an objective. 3. Role playing: This is a form of drama in which the learner acts out roles that will bring out the problems or any challenges in human relations. Purposes of simulation: There are various purposes for using a simulation type of education. Some of the purposes are listed below. 1. Simulation is intended to help the students to practice decision making and problem solving skills. The students will also gain the capability in human interaction abilities in a controlled and safe setting. 2. Through an active involvement in a simulation exercise, the student or participant will be able to achieve cognitive, affective and psycho motor skills. 3. Simulation also gives a chance for applying the principles and theories that students have learned. They will also be able to understand how these principles work. 4. Simulations also help the student or learner to learn the various approaches in a particular situation. They will also be able to learn from their mistakes without any major damage to the people or structures. The knowledge gained through simulation can be easily transferred to the real setting once the learner has mastered the task or activity in a simulated environment. This is the advantage of simulation over many other teaching and learning methods. Real life situations can be simulated which will help the student to understand various situations better and is able to face these situations in real life with confidence. Simulation type of teaching should be incorporated into various training programmes. Article Source: http://www.saching.com About Author / Additional Info: I am a physiotherapist by profession.
