Asthma can be a frightening disease. It is a condition that's on the rise due to the increased levels of pollution in our cities. Asthma can cause various health problems. Difficulty in breathing is one of the important problems associated with asthma. Asthma can affect people of all ages, right from a few weeks old baby to a elderly person.

There are various tips that can help people to cope with asthma and also to self manage the disease. Though self management is good, an initial evaluation and prescription from a physician is necessary. Whenever there is an acute attack, immediate hospitalization is also necessary.

Asthma can cause a discomforting feeling because of the difficulty in breathing. The following tips will help to make the person feel more in control of the disease, than the other way round.
1. Cure:
It is very important for the affected person to remember that asthma can only be controlled and not cured. This is important for the person to identify an exacerbation.

2. Medications: Medications have to be taken usually regularly. For some people with severe asthma, lifelong medications have also been prescribed. The introduction of inhalers has helped many people feel more in control. Spacers can help even young and old people to use the inhalers effectively.

3. Learn: The person affected by the disease has to learn about the disease, because each person may have a different trigger which causes an attack of asthma. The trigger can be pollution, dust, pollen, certain foods etc. Identifying the trigger and avoiding it will help in controlling the disease better.

4. Corticosteroids: These are the best choice of treatments. Though steroids are not good for health otherwise, they are usually given for all patients with asthma. This is because, in the inhaled form, very less steroid is taken into the body.

5. Remission: Asthma is a disease where exacerbations are common after a period of quiet. This has top be understood by the person affected and do according to the need.

6. Inhalers: It is better for a person affected by asthma to regularly carry the inhaler. This will help to use it immediately in case of an acute attack of asthma.

These are the things that have to be remembered by a person affected by asthma. These self management strategies will help to control the disease effectively. Regular check up may not be necessary if the patient understands the disease and the methods of taking proper care of oneself.
