Simple methods of successfully growing indoor herb gardensBY: David Prakash Kumar | Category: Home Improvement | Post Date: 2009-09-13
Herbs are those that are small plants. Most of the small plants that are grown in the garden can be used in our regular cooking. These herbs can not only grow in the sunlight, out in the garden, but also grow indoors. There are various simple methods of growing these herbs indoors. Some of the common herbs that can be grown indoors are those that can be used in cooking. This way the herbs not only add color to your house, but also become useful. Mint leaves and also other similar plants can be grown indoors. This article provides a few tips that can help a beginner to effectively grow these herbs indoors. 1. Light: Thought the herbs may not need sunlight to grow, they need at least some light that will allow them to grow properly. The light source can be any indoor lighting that is present or windows that are present in the room. A good source of light is very essential for the survival of an indoor herb garden. 2. Turning the plants: Some times the plants may start growing in a particular direction because the source of light is in that direction. In this instance the plants in the indoor herb garden have to be turned along with the pot in a semi circle so that the other half of the plant is also ensured proper light. 3. Watering the plants: The indoor plants should not be heavily watered. Adequate care is essential while watering for long survival of the indoor garden herbs. The reason for this is that the indoor plants do not have the sun over them that can evaporate the water from the pot. A small amount of water to keep the soil wet is enough for indoor plants. 4. Spray water: Water should also be sprayed on the leaves. This will keep the leaves fresh. It also keeps them look young. The spraying can be done at any time of the day, but it should be ensured that this spraying does not cause too much water to fall onto the roots as too much water near the roots can kill the plant. 5. Plucking leaves: If the herb is used for various dishes in cooking, then the leaves that are tender and are forming can be used for cooking. This will ensure that there are new shoots formed in the areas that were cut. Regular cutting of the shoots even if not used in cooking is essential for the plants in the indoor herb garden to be healthy. 6. Flowers: When the plant is flowering and you want only the leaves, the flower can be cut off to ensure more leaves in the area. If the plant is a flowering plant, then after the flower has dried, the shoot has to be trimmed again to make sure that the plant gives a new shoot in its place. These are the various simple methods of ensuring that the plant that is grown survives and is also beneficial in the cooking. Plants that are not used in cooking are also grown as part of the indoor herb garden to add beauty to the indoors.
