Signs of Depression. Symptoms of stress, depression and tension.

Depression is a common but a serious illness and many people who have depression never undergo psychiatric treatment. Even though we experience regular mood swings, feelings of sadness and distress but they tend to usually go away in a couple of days. When a person has a depressive disorder, it interferes with daily life, normal functioning, and causes pain for both the person with the disorder and those who care about him or her.

Women tend to have depression more than men, in fact women experience depression twice more than men. Even the children can be a victim of depression. In some cases a person suffering from depression may not even know that he/she is actually depressed.

There are several signs of depression which can vary by age. Symptoms of depression include:

1. Changes in energy level, sleep or hunger (appetite).
2. Loss of interest in social events, sex, friends and activities for more than 2-3 weeks.
3. Feeling of sadness, heart broken, feeling hopeless or even thoughts of death and suicide.
4. You may feel like crying for no specific reason.
5. Feelings worthless, guilt, irritated and inability to make up mind.
6. You may even feel tired, lack of concentration, inability to remember things and even headaches, cramps or digestive problems that do not ease even with treatment.
7. Significant changes in weight even though your diet has remain almost unchanged.
8. You may feel angry, agitated or restless very often.

Even though one or more feelings may not necessarily mean you certainly have depression, it basically means you should consult your doctor if it has been more than a week. Your psychiatric doctor or mental health nurse practitioner may give you medications, advice, eventually refer you to a psychiatric or a rehab center in worst case.

Reasons of depression include death of relative ( or spouse), divorce, jail term, injury, stress at work, marriage depression, retirement, pregnancy, loss of finance or insecurity due to lack of money, mortgage, foreclosure, change of work hours, tension due to an upcoming event or even vacation, tension with a family member, stress to perform better , insecurity and old age.
