GOING ABROAD FOR HIGHER STUDIES - GOOD DECISION:
A high percentage of Indian students now go to United States, Canada, Australia and New Zealand for higher studies, which I personally feel is an excellent choice. Whether you plan to do Masters in Engineering, Medicine or Management, going abroad is almost always a better choice. Not only you will be more valuable professionally but you will also learn a lot in personal life. It will boost your self confidence, help make new contacts and increase your marketability. If you have got good marks in TOEFL, GRE, GMAT etc .. and you can afford the costs, I recommend that you should certainly go ahead for it.

SHOULD I USE THE SERVICES OF A HIGHER EDUCATION CONSULTANT?
If you have got a very high score in exam/test and you are getting admission among the top 10-20 education institutes of that country in a branch you want to pursue higher education (perfect !!) or if you have a friend studying in that college, you probably do not need the services of a higher education consultant. For all others I seriously think it's a good idea to spend your money on a "good" consultant for foreign education.

It is important to visit a consultant who has been working in this field for a long time, and not necessarily who has recently opened this business or has cheaper services. Many consultants will even offer free services because they get paid by colleges themselves if they are able to get your admission done in that college, in that case you know their opinion will be biased because they will always try to place you only in those colleges who pay them. Therefore you need services of an unbiased, experienced and a knowledgeable higher education consultant, even if you have to visit a make a trip to a bigger city like (New Delhi, Calcutta, Madras, Bombay or Bangalore), and remember good consultants often have a waiting period, so get your appointment by booking in advance.

SELF STUDY - BEFORE YOU GO TO A EDUCATION CONSULTANT:
There are several resources on the internet which will tell you even minute details about a college. It includes cost, reputation, quality of education in a branch, placements, average salary, any opportunity to earn on campus during your course, legal aspects and student intake/acceptance ratio. Also consider facts like - say you want to do Masters Computer Science and you qualify in overall 10th best engineering college, but that college may be 20th best for Computer science education, while a college which is 15th best overall, may be 5th best for Computer Science engineering education, and possibly cheaper too. Therefore you want to do greater granular research. May be even talk to some of your senior friend who is already studying abroad. Before you actually see a higher education consultant for foreign studies you should have a list of 5-10 colleges which you feel may be right for you. Make a small file which includes your marksheets, test scores (Gre/Gmat etc), your preferences but do not attach your preferred list of 5-10 colleges in file for consultant, you want to get the opinion of the consultant before opening your cards. Bottomline, Go prepared !!

WHAT WILL A HIGHER EDUCATION CONSULTANT GUIDE YOU ABOUT:
An experienced and knowledgeable consultant will be able to go through a file pretty quickly and will be able to answer most of the following questions:

1. Career Counselling:
A good consultant will be able to tell you about various options that may be right for you, for example you may just want to Masters in Electronics/Computer science, but your consultant will be able to suggest more opportunities like Masters in speech recognition or artificial intelligence. Many foreign country colleges offer specialization in outstanding fields which have a very bright future. Therefore career counselling is a step which will help broaden your thought process and the options you have.

2. Which country/college to go:
As you know, going to foreign country for higher studies is a very broad term, there are many other factors like your financial background, scores, visa etc.. an education consultant will precisely be able to make you suggestions which you may have never thought. He may also have practical reviews and references of some of his ex-students who he may be able to provide. He may pin-point issues which you never thought yourself. After his initial judgement, its the time to present your list of 5-10 colleges that you had made yourself earlier.

3. Admission Guidance:
Your consultant will tell you basic things on how and when to apply, forms needed, how to write statement of purpose (SOP) and many other things. He will also be able to tell you if Fall or Spring semester is the best for applying and in a particular college and possibly a small handbook which will answer many generic questions.

4. Admission Safety:
In many cases the consultant will have a direct tie-up with the college you had in mind, this will really simplify the whole process.

5. Financial/cost estimation:
A good higher education consultant will be able to give you practical things like estimating the actual costs - cost of living, ability to earn during the course and even how much amount you should show to the embassy during visa application.

6. Student visa assistance:
These people are experts in preparing you to get a student visa, they will possibly tell you if you have a lesser chance of getting visa for a particular country or a better chance in others. They will help you prepare a case so that you will get student visa in 90+% of the cases. They will tell you things which you will likely forget.

7. Accommodation / Residential guidance:
In most cases living in college campus can be expensive, therefore in most colleges most students prefer staying on a shared apartment. In many cases he will be able to give reference of his previous candidates or websites to use for finding an accommodation.

8. Travel guidance:
Not always, but there are times a consultant is able to arrange someone to pick you up at the airport through is contacts or using university tie-ups. He may also be able to tell you not fly with unnecessary items which may be available there without any trouble.

9. Job/placement awareness:
A consultant will be able to tell you about the jobs you can expect to get after the course is over, rules about the hours you can work during the term of your course and good medicine/ management / software companies around the area.

Therefore it is important to select a good Education Consultant when you are planning to pursue for higher studies in a foreign country. Do not follow him blindly and always do your own research before really going ahead and applying.
