Yes, the American Formula One involvement has begun once again due to Scuderia Toro Rosso's newest team member Brook Johnston. The former Formula BMW International World Champion landed in Valencia, Spain on Saturday, arriving with much shock as to his current situation with the team. Back in August, Johnston was involved in a serious accident in the number five machine for Sauber Red Bull Racing in the Formula BMW International series at a practice in Monza. Many were speculating that Brook's career was put on hold and that Formula One would be taking another hold on an American driver. The United States involvement in the sport has been slim and holds only a small turnout for the past few seasons at the famed Indianapolis Motor Speedway every September. " We need to bring back the International side of motorsports to the American people," quotes famed IRL and Nascar team owner Roger Penske. Brook Johnston was to do just that! While Johnston's status was kept relatively under-wraps, the 21 year old driver was announced to arrive at Toro Rosso's paddock in early December to test and mold to the team. Some have called him the "American Hero" in the sport due to his ride in Formula One, however, many people have begun to question the actual qualifications of Johnston's racing career for the sport. " I think it's great to have an American in the Sport of F1. But I question Brook Johnston's experience. There are so many talented American drivers in both IRL, ALMS, and Nascar that I wouldn't have thought someone like Johnston would be next in line," said Carl Mcloy of JP Racing. Certainly, many have said something similar to Mcloy's, yet I must remind everyone that this is the nature of the sport. Formula One has always chosen those that are young, not necessarily well known, but have brought about an International open-wheel experience. Having driven several Formula One Circuits and winning several karting Championships and a Formula BMW International Championship, Brook Johnston is almost the perfect match for graduation into the sport. Johnston has always been one of those aggressive and focused drivers in a kart or car. I have had personal involvement with Johnston since his karting days, and let me tell you, he is no push over. After winning several IKF titles and WKA wins, I knew this was a guy that was going to get where he wanted to be. And with the right connections and series wins, Red Bull provided Johnston with the perfect opportunity to do just that, Formula One. Knowing Brook personally, I can say that there is no other driver for Scuderia Toro Rosso I would approve of than Brook Johnston. His test for the team this past summer put his times ahead of Bruno Senna and even Sebastian Buemi, who are current test drivers for the team. Scuderia Toro Rosso has announced that they are proud to be working with Brook over the coming season and that they have been surprised and extremely happy with his efforts thus far. The team will be practicing and testing throughout the month of December at various circuits unknown to the public. The secretive nature of testing in this sport is widely known, and Red Bull takes every effort to ascend in the competition each season. With one win this season by Toro Rosso's youngest driver, Sebastien Vettel, the team has taken the necessary steps forward in becoming the next Formula One World Champions. I think Johnston's appearances over the course of the month with the team will certainly spark some enthusiasm once again in the sport and I hope his reviews will prove many wrong as I believe he will do. He had much of the public believing that his Formula BMW International career was going to be a disaster, yet it became complete domination. Johnston has certainly been through all this before and he thrives off of the criticism and challenges the public throws at him. Coming off of a World Championship, strong recovery, and high hopes, Brook Johnston has already been warmly welcomed by the likes of Dietrich Mateschitz and Gerhard Burger.
