Scientific paper and research report writingBY: David Prakash Kumar | Category: Education | Post Date: 2009-07-04
Presentation of reports and report writing is a very neglected part of many research projects. Many interesting studies are done and sometimes never reported because the researcher may not have known the correct method of presenting the paper. The most common cause is that the researchers does no report or present the study if the result was not according to their expectation. They usually forget that even a negative result in research can be used as a guideline. This article aims to give a guideline for writing a research paper 1. Title Page: This should, as the name indicates, give the title of the page. The names of the authors, the organization they work for and their qualification are all written here. 2. Summary (also called abstract): This should be a systematic short summary of the report. It should include, in a nutshell, the objectives of the study, main methods, key results and the conclusion. 3. Introduction: The explanation for doing the study is written here. This also includes the relevant literature review. The study questions can be included here. 4. Subjects and methods: It is also called materials and methods. A description of when and where the study was done, the sampling, selection methods and randomization are written here. The statistical method used is also written. 5. Results: Here the main results are written, in either a graph or a written format. There should be references for all the charts and the tables. 6. Discussion: This part helps the reader interpret the findings. The significance of the results can be found here. Discuss how your results can be used and what they mean to the relevant scientific world. 7. Conclusions & Recommendations: This section is optional. These are the conclusions and recommendations that are the result of your study. This should not be your opinion. The recommendations should stem from the results of your study and should be valid. Do not try to globalize the findings unless you have used a very large sample. 8. Bibliography: This is another important section of your paper. It helps the readers to look up the references used in the study. So try to write what is available in the bibliography. This is the order in which the scientific paper should be written. This will help in early publication of the paper in reputed peer reviewed journals and will help you get the glory and praise you deserve for all the hard work. I hope this article will give you a good start for your next scientific paper or research report writing.
